The Unstable and Weak Shoulder: Ongoing Shoulder Issues

Presented by MCAP

Shoulder instability is common in many sports, especially in AFL as the shoulder joint is particularly vulnerable to injury due to its complex structure and the large range of motion required during play.

Shoulder injuries account for approximately 11 per cent of all reported injuries in the AFL which means it is very important to look after your shoulder health.

Shoulder instability occurs when the ball and socket joint in the shoulder is loose, causing the shoulder to move out of its normal position, often caused by a traumatic injury or repetitive overuse. In AFL, it is highlighted in players who frequently mark, tackle, bump, or fall onto their shoulder.

The symptoms of an unstable shoulder can include pain, weakness, a feeling of instability or looseness in the shoulder joint, and a popping or clicking sound when the shoulder moves. This is especially noticed in overhead shoulder movements but can even be felt sometimes when performing push-ups or bench press. In severe cases, the shoulder can even dislocate sometimes repetitively.

If you are suffering from an unstable shoulder, it is important to see a healthcare professional such as a Sports Physiotherapist or an Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach as ignoring it can often make the instability worse. They will assess the severity of the shoulder instability and provide a personalised rehabilitation and training program to improve your shoulder strength and regain the stability in the shoulder. They can also tape or provide bracing options to help get you through training and match day while you work on your rehabilitation.

At MCAP, we have qualified Sports Physiotherapists and Accredited Strength Coaches who have worked with many AFL athletes to assist them with their shoulder injuries. Don't let injuries hold you back from reaching your full potential.
