Strathmore Community Bank Men's Weekend Outlook - Round 3, 2022

By Adam Russell

The Easter weekend provided a much needed break for some teams after a fluctuating opening two rounds.

Pascoe Vale will return to Raeburn Reserve on Saturday looking to avenge a Round 2 loss to East Keilor which had Digby Morrell seething in his Nena and Pasadena EDFL Post Game Show interview afterward.

While the likes of Ben Allen, Daniel Guccione, Julian Hemala and Lachie Stredwick have put in some strong individual performances to start the season, the Panthers will be looking for a more cohesive team effort this week when they host Essendon Doutta Stars.

Douttas, who currently sit 0-2, have been plucky in the first fortnight of the season, leading the in-form East Keilor for three quarters and holding their own against a strong Aberfeldie team.

Karl Brown has been the key up forward so far for the Stars with Declan Tully and Campbell Wearne also valent contributors in Paul Barnard's team.

Don't write off the underdog Stars in this contest.

Maribyrnong Park will get another chance to prove their credentials in Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division as they travel to Joe Brown Oval to take on Keilor.

The Lions came up short against Aberfeldie in Round 1 but were able to bounce back under lights against local rivals Avondale Heights last round.

It leaves Brad Swain's side teetering at 1-1 on the ladder with some tough competition currently in the same position.

But with the Blues slightly undermanned, Marby might like their chances here.

With Andrew Browne still currently unavailable, the height factor of the Prowse brothers bodes as an opportunity to assert dominance on the game.

If they can give Tom Baravi and Sean Hetherington first use of the football, the Lions can be a dangerous prospect going forward.

East Keilor will get the opportunity to go 3-0 to start the season when Greenvale enters Cougarland on Saturday.

It has been a dream start for Tim Bongetti's team with the Cougars walking the walk as the newly promoted team in Premier Division.

Jacob Thompson looms as the big threat in the Greenvale forward line and the potential match-up against Lockie Rayner would provide an intriguing battle for onlookers.

On Anzac Day, both Avondale Heights and Glenroy will be looking to get their first wins of the 2022 season, however the two home sides will go in as underdogs against Aberfeldie and Strathmore respectively.

With the two teams currently sitting ninth and tenth on the Premier Division ladder, a competitive performance to protect percentage might be considered a victory to some.

A huge Sunbury derby headlines a number of enticing matchups in Strathmore Community Bank Division One.

Rupertswood put win number one on the board in Round 2, defeating Roxburgh Park up at the Shark Tank.

It was a victory that proved Arron Bray's team were truly finding a groove, two years into their EDFL tenure.

The 94 points Rupo put on the board in Round 2 would have been their second highest score in 2021 after averaging 61 points a game last season.

New recruit Ben Said has led the way kicking nine goals in the opening two rounds, while Jacob Chahine and Zac Saad have been valuable targets going forward.

For the Kangaroos, they'll need to bounce back after a Good Friday loss at the hands of Hillside.

The regular contributors like Tierone Cuffe and Brenton Sutherland are pulling their weight, but need more support across all three lines.

With an unknown return date on 2021 Team of the Year defender Daniel Gregory, the Kangas will have their hands full with this more potent Rupo line-up.

It has been a bumpy return to Strathmore Community Bank Division One for Craigieburn, but the Eagles will be hoping to get their season back on track with a trip to Lakeside Oval.

A tough opening fixture against West Coburg and Airport West sees Craigieburn sitting bottom of the ladder after two rounds.

An opportunity against local rivals Roxburgh Park might be the spark Justin Sherman's side needs.

The Magpies have had a perfectly even start to the season sitting at 1-1 with a percentage bang on 100 percent, but on their home deck they will fancy themselves a good chance in this contest.

West Coburg will be looking to keep the heat on the top two as they welcome Moonee Valley to the 'Shoretress'.

It's been a tough start for the Fog after promotion from Division One and this weekend's task doesn't make it any easier.

The Burgers have plenty of firepower up forward headlined by Lynden Dunn.

On the smaller Shore Reserve, there's plenty of opportunity to get the ball in fast to the forwards, so it will be up to the Moonee Valley midfield to put pressure up the ground and give their backline a chop out.

On the back of a big Good Friday win, Hillside will play host to Tullamarine at Shark Park.

The Sharks have created a strong dynamic with some fresh faces breathing fresh life into the black, white and teal jumper but they'll need more than that to conquer an impressive Tulla line-up.

Finally, the showpiece battle on Anzac Day in Strathmore Community Bank Division One will play out at Hansen Reserve.

Airport West and Westmeadows take centre stage on Monday as two premiership contenders go head-to-head.

At home and on form, they Eagles will go in favourites and with the quality of depth that runs through their best 22, it's hard to argue that point.

Ned Gentile has found himself to be a goal kicker this season, snagging a bag of 10 in Round 2 after traditionally being the provider, not recipient, going forward.

However there are plenty of other strings in the Airport West arsenal with Muhammad Saad, Tyson Young, Ibi Tahi and reigning Hutchison Medallist Nik Hrkac all rolling through the forward 50.

The Tigers had a rough day out in Round 2 against the Burgers but still have a multitude of talent at their disposal to make this a real contest.

Mitch Church has been in fine form to begin the year, and while its been a slow start for some, the names of Omar Saad, Ahmed Abdul-Wahed, Aaron Evans and Jason Kenneth are hard to ignore.

Be sure to tune in to the Nena and Pasadena Match of the Day from 2pm on Monday thanks to Cluch TV and 98.9 North West FM.

It will be a Nena and Pasadena Match of the Day double-header with the van starting the weekend at Brookside Recreation Reserve.

Burnside Heights will host Coburg Districts at its home away from home with both sides locked away at 1-1 on the Strathmore Community Bank Division Two ladder.

Jacob Elia and Theo Sapountzis were both lively up forward for Burnside Heights in its Round 2 victory over Hadfield as the Bears continue to deal with life after Josh Covelli.

For the Districts, they'll be licking their wounds after a tough loss at the hands of Keilor Park on Good Friday.

After a 49-point loss to the Devils and a come-from-behind win in Round 1 against Taylors Lakes, it's hard to get a read on where Coburg Districts are at right now.

Some of those answers may be revealed come 2pm Saturday with live coverage thanks to Cluch TV and 98.9 North West FM.

Speaking of the Devils' big win on Good Friday, they'll be looking to continue their hot from when they come up against the Northern Saints on Saturday.

Robbie Castello was firing with five goals last week and the inclusion of Daylan Kempster provided an immediate impact for Paul Guicas.

The Devils will also welcome back Damien Cavka after he served his one-match suspension last week.

The contest at Martin Reserve is shaping up to be an interesting game.

Oak Park is the only undefeated team in Division Two after two rounds amplifying the closeness of this division.

The Kangaroos entered the season as one of the premiership favourites and have done their credentials no harm so far with strong wins over Burnside Heights and Jacana.

The Hawks could be their toughest opponent to date, however it may depend on which Hadfield side shows up.

After knocking off the highly-rated Keilor Park outfit in Round 1, Brett Pitts' team stumbled at home against the Bears in Round 2, raising the question on the consistency this will provide week-in, week-out.

It was an enthralling 10-point victory to Oak Park in this fixture last year, and a similar margin will have the fans at Martin Reserve licking their lips.

Taylors Lakes will be seeking back-to-back wins after going winless for 966 days previously.

With Jacana travelling to Lionheart Reserve, it will be Charles Cuzzupi's team in the box seat to take the four points.
