EDFL Women's Weekend Outlook - Thursday April 25, 2024

Presented by Airport Toyota | By Joseph Ibic

Aberfeldie will host Maribyrnong Park in the first game of Round 3 at Clifton Park.

Aberfeldie picked up their first win of the season with a 56-point victory over rivals Keilor and will be looking to continue building on that.

Marby Park won their first game for the year as well defeating Moonee Valley in a high-scoring encounter and will be hoping to carry that goalkicking momentum into Saturday's clash.

Both sides have proven to be very strong offensively, but defence might be what separates the two in the end.

The two undefeated teams in Oak Park and Hillside will face off at JP Fawkner Reserve in what shapes to be the match of the round.

Last year's premiers Oak Park put up an incredible defensive performance against Douttas keeping them to just four points.

However, Oak Park struggled to hit the scoreboard themselves kicking just two goals and 20 points overall and will need to improve in front of goal in order to stop a rampant Hillside this week.

The Sharks once again showed they are a genuine contender after smashing Westmeadows by 93 points in what was an incredible display at both ends of the ground.

Sharks forward Caitlin Sargent scored five goals and Oak Park will no doubt be looking to stop her repeating that this weekend.

Moonee Valley will take on the winless Keilor at Ormond Park.

Moonee Valley are coming off a tough loss to Marby Park in which they put up a fight, but were no match for Marby’s attacking prowess.

The Fog will fancy their chances against the winless Keilor in a bid to show they have what it takes to play finals football later in the year.

It’s been a tough start for Keilor so far, for a team that made finals last year, but they have come up against two of the best teams in the competition.

Both teams will feel that a win here is vital to get their seasons moving in the right direction.

The bottom of the ladder Westmeadows will be looking to cause an upset when they play Essendon Doutta Stars at Willlowbrook Reserve.

The Tigers have struggled to find their feet so far this season and a 93-point loss to Hillside would've hurt.

This game against newly promoted Essendon Doutta Stars presents a perfect opportunity for the Tigers to demonstrate their abilities in the top flight.

Douttas have enjoyed a good start to life in Premier Division, despite losing last week to the reigning premiers, and will be wanting to cement that good start by defeating the struggling Westmeadows.

Douttas have shown in both their matches their ability to defend, and Westmeadows have struggled so far to score with only two goals scored in two games which could be decisive in the outcome.

Burnside Heights will play host to Strathmore/Pascoe Vale at Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve.

Burnside are unbeaten so far this season and are shooting for a third straight win against an opponent that is winless.

The Bears inaccuracy was the only thing stopping them from recording a massive win over Tulla, with the end margin of 25 points not showing the Bears' dominance during the game.

Strathmore/Pascoe Vale have had a tough start to life as a combined team as they are currently last and failed to score a single point last week against Airport West.

This week looms as another tough challenge for the combined Mores/Pacco outfit.

Greenvale are taking on Airport West in what looms as a must watch match at Greenvale Recreation Reserve.

Greenvale are sitting in third currently and are coming off a comfortable win against Keilor Park and are looking to find their 2023 form against a tough opponent this weekend.

Alisa Magri kicked six goals last week and as the back-to-back league leading goalkicker, Airport West will know it is crucial to stop her if they are to win this weekend.

Airport West are currently sitting top of the table after two 50+ point wins to start the season.

The key to their dominance so far has been their defensive efforts as both their opponents combined have only managed two goals against them.

They will need to be at their best defensively this week to continue their unbeaten run and prove their finals credentials early in the season.

Coburg Districts will face Roxburgh Park at Cole Reserve this Saturday.

The Districts started their season last week with a comfortable win over Glenroy by 89 points.

Olivia Woods kicked five goals in the win and Roxy will no doubt be looking at her as one of the players they need to stop.

Roxburgh Park were brought back down to earth last weekend losing by 44 points after a Round 1 win.

Roxy will now be looking at causing an upset against a potential premiership contender.

Taylors Lakes are playing host to Sunbury Kangaroos this weekend at Lionheart Reserve.

The Lakers will be fresh coming off the bye and looking to get back to where they left off after a dominant 102-point win in Round 1.

While that win did come against last place East Sunbury, the manner in which they won shows they could be a force to be reckoned with this season.

The Kangaroos' only win of the season was also against East Sunbury who they defeated comfortably.

This week's encounter proves a massive test for both teams and will show the competition where both these teams are at.

Glenroy take on the first place Sunbury Lions this weekend at Sewell Reserve.

Glenroy are still searching for their first ever win in women’s football after being beaten convincingly by Coburg Districts last weekend.

It won’t get any easier this week for Glenroy as they look to break not only their winless streak, but also their opponent's undefeated streak as well.

Sunbury Lions forward Natachia Abela is the division's leading goalkicker with nine goals and will be a key player to stop for Glenroy if they are to cause an upset.

The Lions will look to continue their impressive attacking form against a team that has leaked quite a few goals in the first couple of rounds.
