ABERFELDIE v KEILOR
Live Stream Game
Saturday 3:00pm at Windy Hill
ABERFELDIE and Keilor have been the benchmark teams in EDFL Women’s - Premier in 2019 and will face off in the biggest game of the year.
Aberfeldie come into the match undefeated, following in the steps of Pascoe Vale in 2018.
Keilor, rarely beaten otherwise, have found the going challenging against the minor premiers and will need to be relentless in their approach to the ball from the get-go on Saturday.
The first couple of goals are critical.
In their initial meetings, it has been Aberfeldie that have taken control from the first bounce.
The closest result between these sides occurred in Round 7 (12 points), with their latest meeting in the Semi Final at Windy Hill ending in a 30-point win to Aberfeldie.
This victory by Aberfeldie earned them the first spot in this Grand Final while Keilor had to get here the hard way, taking on the biggest improvers of 2019, Hillside in last week’s Preliminary Final.
The Blues were tested by the Sharks, but were eventually able to draw away through goals to Brooke Todero (two), Kaitlyn O'Keefe and Tanay Barbuto.
Lisa Kirby shapes as key to the Blues’ chances but was held goalless in the Semi.
Kirby’s leadership and direction is important to the structure of the Blues up forward.
Erin Bult will also be significant, roving the ball off the packs and setting up play through the middle of the ground.
Repeat efforts will be the order of the day and Amanda Seoud is one of Keilor’s leaders in this regard.
Her three-effort attack on the ball against Hillside was one of the individual highlights of last week’s game.
Keilor still have a handful of key players, including Kallyn Gent, Taylor Jones, Tanay Barbuto and Brooke Todero, who were part of their successful 2017 EDFL/WRFL Grand Final campaign.
They will remember the winning feeling that followed and be desperate to share it with their newer teammates.
Much of the reason for Aberfeldie’s success during the year has been consistency and spread.
Aberfeldie have players with match-winning ability but also a number of strong-role playing contributors who are just as critical coming into the Grand Final.
The slick ball movement by Amy Smith, Olivia Madden and Kurtis Shine troubled the Blues in their Semi Final win.
The combativeness of Siobhan Carlton (20 goals) in the forward half will have Keilor’s defenders on their toes.
Aberfeldie also have the capacity to swing Sophie Cachia up forward, having started in the back line in their last match, before ending as the leading scorer with two goals.
Again, work rate and pressure could be telling factors.
If Aberfeldie get clear access to the ball, they have proven how dangerous they can be.
