HILLSIDE 16.9 (105) def. WEST COBURG 8.5 (53)
MATCH CENTRE
Hillside has sent a powerful warning to the rest of the competition with their 52-point demolition job over premiership fancies West Coburg.
In perhaps the most highly anticipated matchup of the round, it was the Sharks who took the Burgers into the depths of Shark Park and swam away as emphatic winners.
After an even first quarter where West Coburg actually led by 10 points, it was all Hillside from then on.
The Sharks went on to sink their teeth into the Burgers and produce a scintillating six-goal-to-nil second quarter to prove that when at their best, they are almost unstoppable.
Once they had struck, West Coburg could never recover, and the Sharks would go on to collect a pivotal win for their season and top three chances.
The win leaves them lurking down in fifth position on the ladder, but with some favourable matchups to come in the next few weeks, one can expect them to navigate themselves back into the top three and into familiar waters.
Again, it was the young guns who led the attack, with Khalil Kaakour, Noah Asciak, and Nick Karakyriakos all named in the best.
Seasoned campaigner and vice-captain Josh Covelli also chipped in with a haul of four goals.
Meanwhile for West Coburg, it’s back-to-back losses for the first time in 2025.
After a phenomenal run of form which saw them win six games in a row, they have lost three out of their last four and have been left searching for answers after being comprehensively beaten here.
Their four losses to date have all been against other top five sides. They’ve been beaten by Avondale Heights twice and have also gone down to Oak Park, and now Hillside.
Despite the loss, Damian Galofaro had a day out as he booted through a bag of six goals.
Hillside will travel to Kings Park next week to take on St Albans in a twilight showdown, while West Coburg get a chance to redeem themselves when they take on Roxburgh Park.
AVONDALE HEIGHTS 11.12 (78) def. by OAK PARK 15.7 (97)
MATCH CENTRE
Oak Park has taken down the in-form Avondale Heights in a superb 19-point victory away from home.
The win sees the Kangaroos remain as ladder leaders, and surge two games clear of Avondale in second position.
In a statement-making game, Oak Park were ultimately too good for a brave Heights outfit.
The Kangaroos led at every break in play, and despite being challenged, never looked like losing as they skipped clear to take their season record to nine wins and just the two losses.
They entered half-time with an exact four-goal lead, but were then challenged in the third quarter from a persistent Avondale Heights.
Despite Oak Park only taking a slender 11-point lead into the final quarter, the match was very much still on their terms.
They missed some simple opportunities in front of goals throughout the first three quarters but corrected this in the final term as they went on to kick six goals straight.
Jedd Taylor and Paul Pascu led the charge for Oak Park, combining for eight goals and producing pivotal individual performances.
Taylor was a brute force up forward and worked hard for his bag of five majors. Meanwhile Pascu was dangerous all day as he collected his fair share of the footy and also chipped in with three goals.
On the other end of the ledger, it’s the first loss at home since Round 4 for Avondale but there were plenty of positives to take away from the performance.
A more effective and even team contribution was a key takeaway from the match.
While usual suspects Bailey Williamson and Justin Morris had their expected impact, it was youngster Ben Powell who provided a spark when they need it most. Nathan Foster also put together a good performance with three goals to his name.
Avondale will look to bounce back next week when they host Taylors Lakes, meanwhile Oak Park returns home to host Tullamarine.
TAYLORS LAKES 11.15 (81) def. MOONEE VALLEY 7.9 (51)
MATCH CENTRE
Taylors Lakes has recorded its fourth consecutive win with a gritty 30-point win over Moonee Valley.
In game 250 as senior coach for Steve Burns, the Lions were made to earn it as Moonee Valley threw out a strong challenge, particularly in what was a hot and fiery second quarter.
The Lions shot out of the blocks early and took a two-goal lead into quarter time, yet they should have led by at least another two to three. They kicked 2.6 in the first term as they missed some easy chances in front of the sticks.
As a result of this, they left the door open for a Moonee Valley response, and respond they certainly did.
The Fog put forward a five-goal-to-three second quarter and produced some exceptional football to take a slim two-point lead into the main break.
The game was evenly poised and was setup for a fitting finish for the occasion, but the Lions lifted.
They clawed and snatched their way to an inaccurate 30-point win, but nevertheless four points is four points.
They had 26 scoring shots to the Valley’s 15.
Star forward Damien Petrone continued on with his stellar season with another bag of five goals, while Darby Lalor was also among the best.
Things are starting to turn at Moonee Valley.
Despite the loss, they again played some exceptional footy to prove that their last month has certainly not been an outlier.
On a positive note, to go toe-for-toe with perhaps one of the most in-form teams in the competition is a key takeaway.
Given they sit in seventh position on the ladder, being one game and percentage out of the top five, every game from now is critical for their season.
If they want to be fighting it out for a potential finals berth, they’ll need to produce a full four-quarter performance week in and week out.
Josh Toy was a brick wall in defence all day as he produced another solid performance.
They’ll get the chance to prove this next week when they host Craigieburn, meanwhile Taylors Lakes will travel to Canning Reserve for a blockbuster clash with Avondale Heights.
TULLAMARINE 13.5 (83) def. by ST ALBANS 13.13 (91)
MATCH CENTRE
St Albans have produced a brilliant eight-point win over Tullamarine in a sensational come-from-behind performance.
In a win that could save their season, St Albans are now firmly back in the finals hunt.
The Saints were obliterated in the first quarter by Tullamarine and were jumped by four goals as the Dees took a 24-point lead into the first break.
In a see-sawing contest, the second term was then a direct flip of the first with the Saints charging back to produce a five-goal-to-one second quarter.
They took a minor six-point lead into half-time.
In a highly anticipated second-half, both sides went toe-to-toe and blow-for-blow as the home side refused to fold.
In the end, it was St Albans who came out on top in of the games of the season so far.
The win leaves them sitting in equal fifth on the ladder, but with a challenging two weeks to come when they face Hillside and West Coburg, the four points were critical on the weekend.
Captain Jake Galea was back to his best in a genuine captain’s performance. He kicked five crucial goals to lift his side over the line.
Meanwhile for the Dees, it was another case of what if.
Despite a sack of seven goals from star forward Shaun McKernan, it wasn’t enough to claim the four points here.
They played some of the best football they have produced all year but couldn’t find a way to get the job done.
With an ominous date with Oak Park looming next week, form suggests that they’ll have to produce a new season peak to be in with a chance.
St Albans will host Hillside next week in a twilight blockbuster, meanwhile as just discussed, Tullamarine will travel to JP Fawkner Reserve to take on ladder leaders Oak Park.

CRAIGIEBURN 17.18 (120) def. ROXBURGH PARK 4.8 (32)
MATCH CENTRE
Craigieburn has crushed Roxburgh Park by 88-points in a bulldozing win at DS Aitken Reserve.
The win brings an end to the Eagles' horror run of six consecutive defeats, and sparks some life back into what’s been a disappointing season.
By no means were Craigieburn in cruise control though, and it wasn’t until the final quarter where they kicked clear.
With inaccuracy costing them, they had 24 scoring shots by three-quarter time but only converted 10 of these into goals.
However, they corrected this in the final term to kick seven goals and just four points and categorically run away as 88-point winners.
Brent Gordon had his best game of the season in the last of his brilliant career with five goals, while they had another four players chip in with two goals each.
Roxburgh Park would like to have this one back.
After a much-improved past month of footy where they’ve beaten St Albans and been competitive against Moonee Valley and Taylors Lakes, they simply looked flat on the weekend.
They remain slumped down the bottom of the ladder with just the one win to show for season 2025, and it gets no easier for them next week when they take on what will no doubt be a hungry West Coburg.
In a gloomy day, Bradley Dimech battled hard and was among their best.
Craigieburn will travel to Ormond Park next week to take on Moonee Valley in what’s an intriguing contest, meanwhile Roxburgh Park will need to pull out all the stops if they want to be competitive against West Coburg.
