EDFL Men’s Weekend Outlook – July 28th, 2022

Presented by Strathmore Community Bank and Rookie Me | By Jordan Zoch

The race for finals is starting to heat up, could we see some late runs made in the final four rounds of the season.

Strathmore will be looking to stay in the hunt for a top two spot as they travel to Greenvale, looking to make it 2-0 against the Jets for season 2022.

After their 27-point victory earlier in the season, Strathmore will be hoping to bag the four points and continue to put pressure on Keilor in second place on the ladder.

Both sides are well rested, coming off a week’s rest due to the split round, with Greenvale needing everything to go right if they want to sneak into a finals position.

Hoping to remain in second place are Keilor as they travel to Nipper Jordan Oval to face an Essendon Doutta Stars side looking to remain safely outside of the relegation zone.

Their Round 6 meeting had a comfortable 128-point win for Keilor, but with everything to play for, the Stars will be looking to cause an upset.

A lot has happened since their top of the table clash earlier in the season, unfortunately for East Keilor, their last month of football has only produced one win, with Aberfeldie winning six on the bounce.

As both sides prepare to face off this weekend, the Cougars will be hoping to overturn their recent run of bad form, a loss could prove to be catastrophic for their final’s chances, as Maribyrnong Park continue to make a late season charge.

Could Maribyrnong Park come from the clouds and sneak into a finals position?

They need everything to go their way, starting with a tough match against Pascoe Vale at Raeburn Reserve.

Following their impressive 7-point victory in Round 7 against the Panthers, the Lions hopes of a surprise finals berth rest on the shoulders of winning these tough matches.

And while a loss for the Panthers would see them remain in fourth position, depending on the way results land they could be faced with a fight to remain firmly inside the top four.

The final game of the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division sees the Nena and Pasadena Commentary Van head out to Sewell Reserve for the incoming relegation shaping clash between Glenroy and Avondale Heights.

With the fight to remain in Premier Division coming down to three sides, this match could prove to be the make-or-break game in deciding next year’s topflight line-up.

An impressive past month has seen Avondale rocket up to eigth after having sat the whole first half of the season firmly at the bottom, their position replaced by a Glenroy side so far recording their only victory against Avondale in Round 6.

Be sure to tune in to the Nena and Pasadena Match of the Day from 2pm on Saturday thanks to Cluch TV and 98.9 North West FM to catch all the action.

With only three rounds to go, the jostling for finals positions has well and truly begun, this weekend providing the backdrop for some mouth-watering matchups.

Fresh off the departure of head coach Justin Sherman, Craigieburn face the tough visiting Tullamarine side looking to keep their place in second on the ladder.

With Christian McErlain and Jake Carlisle taking over for the remainder of the season could we see a resurgence from the Eagles that keeps them in Division One for another season?

With positions 3-6 on the ladder separated by only two games, banking wins continues to be vital ahead of the final’s series.

Roxburgh Park travel to Hansen Reserve to take on ladder leaders Airport West in a clash that will potentially shape their challenge for a finals berth.

Having won their lash nine on the trot, Airport West continue to be the inform side of the competition vying for promotion come season's end.

Moonee Valley will be looking to make it three wins from as many games as they continue to distance themselves from the bottom two relegation battle.

They will take great confidence into their clash with Hillside, after only going down by 21 points in their earlier Round 7 clash.

Hillside will be looking for another big bag from power forward Josh Covelli when he comes up against his former side, after his eight goals last week against Westmeadows.

A mixed month of results has seen West Coburg drop away from the top two race, they will be hoping to cement themselves in third place on the ladder as they face the bottom ranked Sunbury Kangaroos.

And while they have had a tough season, the Kangaroos did push West Coburg all the way in Round 7, only going down by 7 points.

They will be hoping to channel some of that energy ahead of the weekend.

The final match of the round has massive ramifications for the top four, as Rupertswood will be looking to leapfrog Westmeadows into fourth place on the ladder.

With the pair both sitting on 36 premiership points and only percentage separating them, the match at Willowbrook Reserve is heating up to be a clash of the season.

Both sides enter off the back of two wins, and after their tight Round 7 clash, Rupertswood will be looking to square the ledger for the season and propel themselves into finals calculations.

With only three rounds to go the top teams are jostling for position ahead of the upcoming finals series.

Oak Park travel to Charles Mutton Reserve for their match against a Northern Saints outfit on the improve.

With Oak Park winning their previous encounter by 64 points, the Saints will be hoping for a better performance back at home this week.

Bagging the four points for Oak Park remains vital, if they wish to have any hope of finishing on top of the ladder, currently sitting eight points adrift in second.

Jacana will be hoping to bounce back from two heavy losses and bag their first win of the season as Coburg Districts travel to Jacana reserve.

After five goals in their last meeting, Spencer Aitken has only managed four more majors for the season, could he reignite his goal kicking form this weekend?

Keilor Park will be looking to consolidate their hold atop the ladder, as they face a travelling Burnside outfit looking to close the gap to second on the ladder.

Since dropping points in the first round of the season Keilor Park haven’t been troubled, winning 11 on the trot, with this weekend’s game giving them the opportunity to hit the dozen.

The final match of the round sees Hadfield make the trip to Lionheart Reserve to face the struggling Taylors Lakes.

It has been a tough month for the Lakers, losing three games on the bounce and their goalkicking ace to a season ending injury, this week’s clash provides them with the opportunity to turn the ledger back in their favour.

Barely anything separated the sides in their round 7 matchup, as Hadfield managed to scrape away with the win after a 4-point victory.

They will be hoping to make it 2-0 against the Lakers in 2022 with a win this weekend away from home.
