EDFL Men’s Weekend Outlook – August 11th, 2022

By Jordan Zoch

With only two rounds remaining in the home & away season, the race for the finals has teams jostling for position ahead of the first final series in almost three years.

The Nena and Pasadena Match of the Day van returns to Cougar Land as East Keilor look to thrust themselves back inside the top four, after a lightening start to the season.

Going 1-3 over the last month has seen East Keilor slip to fifth on the ladder after shocking the competition over the first half of the season.

If they are any hope of making an unlikely finals appearance they'll need to leapfrog Pascoe Vale who currently sit in fourth.

The task isn’t an easy one as they face the second placed Keilor who are looking for their fourth win on the bounce. After an easy 50-point victory in their first meeting this season, Keilor will be looking to make it 2-0 against the Cougars.

Be sure to tune in to the Nena and Pasadena Match of the Day from 2pm on Saturday thanks to Cluch TV and 98.9 North West FM to catch all the action.

After their tight away from home victory against Maribyrnong Park last weekend, Greenvale return home, with the premiership fancied Aberfeldie making the trip up the highway.

Sitting pretty with an unassailable 10-point gap atop the ladder, Aberfeldie enter the final rounds of the season in red hot form and a firm favourite to add another premiership to their cabinets at Clifton Park.

It’s been an up and down season for Greenvale, with the past month only generating one win for the club. These final two rounds providing the opportunity to see out the year on a high and knock off some big opposition sides in the process.

As Maribyrnong Park find themselves officially out of the finals race, the last two rounds of the season give them the opportunity to cause upsets and shape the makeup of the top four.

Sitting in third, nothing short of a victory for Strathmore will suffice. Wanting to pile the pressure onto Keilor and remain safely a game infront of Pascoe Vale, the More’s need a strong performance against a Maribyrnong Park outfit with nothing to lose.

The relegation battle continues over the weekend, with bottom two sides Essendon Doutta Stars and Glenroy facing off at Nipper Jordan Oval.

After disappointing Round 16 outings for both sides, they will be looking to bounce back and secure a win that has so far eluded both for much of the season.

And although Glenroy sit a game and sizeable percentage behind in last, an unlikely win this weekend could make the final round results gripping.

The final game of the round sees Pascoe Vale at home to an improving Avondale Heights side safely out of the relegation zone.

For Paco, bagging the four points is vital for their finals hopes as they sit in fourth position a game ahead of East Keilor, and with a massive game in Round 18 v Keilor, keeping the breathing room from the drop zone remains of upmost importance.

As we enter the final round of the Rookie Me Division One season, we are treated with a pre-final’s showdown from two of the clubs vying for the 2022 flag as well as a virtual elimination final.

A fourth vs fifth showdown awaits as West Coburg clash with Rupertswood at Shore Reserve.

While currently the Burgers sit in fouth a game and percentage clear of Rupertswood, could we see a big upset victory and a maiden finals appearance for Rupertswood after their debut in the EDFL last season.

It would need to be a big win to see Rupertswood close the current 5% gap to West Coburg but with everything to play for it might be the match of the round to look out for.

Holding a clear two game gap at the top of the ladder, Airport West face a travelling Hillside at home this weekend.

Wanting to maintain their strong form into finals will be front of mind for Airport West as the Trent Rogers coached outfit has only dropped the one game this season.

Winning four of their previous five matches the final round of the season gives Hillside the chance to take a big scalp into the offseason as they prepare for another season in Rookie Me Division One.

A Disappointing campaign comes to an end this weekend as Sunbury Kangaroos travel to Lakeside Oval for a date with Roxburgh Park.

Generating only one win for the season so far, could we see an upset to top off the year or will Roxy prove to be too strong and add to their eight wins for the year?

After consecutive wins for the first time this season, Moonee Valley will be looking to end the year on a high after securing their place in Division One for another season.

A difficult campaign for Craigieburn comes to an end this week, with so far only two wins on the board, and losing new coach Justin Sherman, the Eagles will be hoping to close out the year with a much-needed victory.

Closing out Division One is a finals preview as second take on third with Tullamarine travelling to Willowbrook reserve.

With the top two already sewn up, Tullamarine will be looking to test themselves ahead of the first week of finals, Westmeadows providing the perfect opponent to do so.

Only a goal would separate the sides after their Round 9 clash, with Tullamarine on the winning side of the ledger, could we see a flipped result in Round 18?

One week to go in Strathmore Community Bank Division Two and the top four has been decided, the final round a placeholder for an intriguing finals series.

After leading the competition for much of the season a slip in the last month has seen Oak Park drop to second on the ladder.

Their final home match of the season pits them against the player coached Northern Saints sitting in seventh place on the ladder.

Into his first season as player-coach, Tamer Abdallah knew it the year would be to build culture and standards in the group, signing off the 2022 campaign with an upset victory could prove the catalyst of a big offseason and 2023 campaign.

Ladder leaders Keilor Park face the bottom placed Jacana for their final match of the season.

The Devils will just be looking to get through the game scott free ahead of finals, while the match will end a follow up campaign for Jacana, a year that produced no official wins but plenty of positives for the purple and gold.

Taylors Lakes will see off their 2022 campaign as Burnside Heights travel to Lionheart Reserve for the last time of 2022.

It’s been a disappointing back end of the season for the Lakes, dropping their past five matches and slumping to sixth on the ladder.

The previous meeting of the clubs this season heralded the only draw for Division Two in 2022, could we see a repeat this weekend? Or will Burnside deliver a strong performance ahead of the final’s series.

Sitting sorely in fifth position Hadfield find themselves 10 points behind a top four berth and 10 infront of sixth placed Taylors Lakes, the campaign almost proving to be a what if for the Hawks.

Their final match of 2022 sees Coburg Districts travel to Martin Reserve ahead of their finals campaign.

The Round 4 meeting between the clubs produced a 70-point drubbing to the better of Hadfield, then Round 11 saw the Districts hit back with a 19-point win at Martin Reserve.
