MARCON’S MEN THUMP BLUES

Sportscast Replay - CLICK HERE

If there were any worries about what a new look Aberfeldie side would produce this season in the top flight, shrug them off, take a breath and relax.

The boys from Clifton Park have maintained their unbeaten start to the season, thumping arch rivals Keilor by 52 points on their home deck.

Although a win was never out of reach for Adam Marcon’s men in this matchup, the margin that it was done by was certainly an eyebrow raiser to most.

Abers jumped out of the blocks and didn’t look back, keeping the visitors goalless at quarter time before taking a five-goal lead into the main break.

From there, it was all guns blazing, as the home side piled on seven goals to one in the third term to take a monstrous 67 point lead into the final change.

Keilor were able to salvage some respectability, adding five goals in the final term, but the dominant Aberfeldie display has certainly put Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division on notice.

They would eventually take the four points with the 16.12.108-8.8.56 win.

Sam Paea dominated on the scoreboard, booting six goals, whilst Josh Misiti added three and Anthony Horomides added two.

Jamie Papalia booted three goals for the visitors, however was the only Blues player to kick multiple goals, as Keilor struggled to maintain pressure and intensity in areas where they are usually extra dominant. Nick O’Kearney was also impressive in a tough outing.

Aberfeldie will be looking to go 5-0 next week when they face a gusty Glenroy side at Sewell Reserve.

Mick McGuane’s men will look to salvage their momentum when they head back home to host Avondale Heights.

IT’S OFFICIAL…THE COUGARS MEAN BUSINESS

The dream start is still alive.

East Keilor have firmly solidified themselves as a flag fancy in Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division.

After an extremely impressive first three weeks which saw them knock off Essendon Doutta Stars, Pascoe Vale and Greenvale, the Cougars have done the unthinkable and have defeated reigning premiers Strathmore at Lebanon Reserve.

In a low scoring slog, East Keilor were able to kick away in the final term for the 10.9.69-8.8.56 win, with the margin not exceeding a solitary point at all changes except after the final siren.

Scores were locked away at 48 apiece at three quarter time, before the Cougars were able to wrestle enough momentum to continue their undefeated start to the season.

Nicholas Grabowski was again impressive for Tim Bongetti’s men, as he led the way with three goals. Chris Stewart added a couple of his own.

Carlos Egan kept the ‘Mores in the game with three goals, and Daniel Mighell followed suit with two goals himself. Still it wasn’t enough for Strathmore, who now sit in an extremely precarious position on the ladder after four rounds.

East Keilor are back on top of the ladder with a healthy percentage, followed close behind by Aberfeldie, the only other side to remain undefeated so far this season.

Strathmore currently sit fifth at 2-2, and will look to bounce back after a vulnerable start to the season when they travel to Raeburn Reserve to face Pascoe Vale.

For the Cougars, they will aim to go 5-0 as well when they host Maribyrnong Park at Cougarland.

LIONS SNEAK HOME IN A MONK OVAL THRILLER

Maribyrnong Park survived a scare, but managed to storm home against a plucky Glenroy outfit on the weekend, defeating the Roys by one-point at Monk Oval.

It was heart-breaking scenes for the new and improved boys from Sewell Reserve, who managed to dart out to a four goal lead at the final break. Marby would then itch and claw their way back into the contest, kicking four goals to none in the final term to snatch the 11.14.80-11.13.79 victory.

Adam Del Busso was brilliant for the visitors, booting four goals, followed by Milad Almatrah (two goals) and Jake Young (two goals). For the Lions, Brandon Ryan led the way with three goals, followed by the ever reliable Sean Hetherington, Tom Baravi and Darcy Griffin who all booted two goals each.

For Glenroy, it will be the game that could’ve been had they kicked accurately, as the visitors were only able to muster four behinds in the final quarter before just dropping devastatingly short.

Both sides have tough matchups in Round 5, and will both face the only two undefeated clubs in the competition. Glenroy will host Abefeldie at Sewell Reserve, whilst Marby will travel to Overland Reserve to face off against East Keilor.

DEES STORM BACK IN LEO DINEEN SPECTACLE

Tullamarine have moved to 4-0 on the season after scraping home against West Coburg by five points at home.

Both sides traded leads throughout the game on the Nena and Pasadena Match of the Day, with the Demons taking a one goal buffer into the first quarter and half time breaks.

The Burgers would then make their move after half time, piling on five goals to one to take a 19 point lead into the last change, before a final quarter resurgence from Shaun McKernan spurred the Dees forward for the 11.6.72-9.13.67 win.

The electrifying forward would boot three of his four goals in the final term to spark the hosts and take them over the line in a brilliant game of football.

James Vistarini and Dominic Micallef added two goals each, whilst Steven Vocale took out the NXP Player of the Game honour.

The Burgers were only able to manage two multiple goal scorers, with Perry Patrikios and Jesse Martini kicking two goals, however the visitor’s unpredictability up forward is something to be impressed about, even with the absence of Lynden Dunn.

Tullamarine will enjoy another home game next week when they host Rupertswood at Leo Dineen Reserve, whilst the Burgers have another blockbuster game against the only other undefeated side in Airport West at Hansen Reserve.

EAGLES ROCK UP NORTH IN DEMOLITION OF ROOS

Craigieburn has shrugged off a shaky start to their Strathmore Community Bank Division One campaign, demolishing the Sunbury Kangaroos by 101 points at D.S Aitken Reserve.

Both sides went into the game winless, but the Eagles were out to prove that they are more than just the cellar dwellers with a commanding 24.10.154-7.11.53 win.

Justin Sherman’s side seemed rejuvenated, even after a tough loss last week at the hands of Roxburgh Park. They would be challenged early, with the Roos taking a one goal lead into the quarter time break, before an explosive 10 goal to one second quarter propelled the Eagles to a 43 point half time lead.

The home side weren’t shy of goal scorers, with Brent Gordon (seven goals) and Brodie White (five goals) leading from the front on a dominant day for Craigieburn.

Dylan Cunningham and Nathan Carroll (two goals each) were the standouts for Sunbury, but it’s back to the drawing board after yet another disappointing defeat for the undermanned Kangaroos who now drop to 0-4.

With their one win this week, the Eagles jump up to seventh on the ladder, leapfrogging Westmeadows by 0.17 of a percent.

Craigieburn have a chance to make it back-to-back wins when they face off against Hillside in a 6th vs 7th battle at Shark Park. For Sunbury, they host Westmeadows at Eric Boardman Reserve in a bid to get their season back on track.

The Northern Saints have suffered a heart-breaking loss on their home deck, going down to Burnside Heights by two points.

In another low scoring affair, Northern commanded the entire game, leading at every change, but late heroics from the Bears stole the contest from their grasp. Aidan Stott’s side would eventually run out 8.14.62-8.12.60 winners in another important “eight pointer” game.

Yet again, it was Theodore Sapountzis and Jacob Elia (two goals each) who stood tall and strong for the visitors. For the Saints, Tamer Abdallah and Fabian Pennelli (two goals) led from the front. Anthony Petrocco and Samuel Kosmak were also impressive in what was a tough outing.

Burnside Heights will be looking to make it four wins in a row when they host Jacana at Brookside Reserve, whilst the Northern Saints will jump across Sydney Road to face their neighbours Hadfield at Martin Reserve.

SHARKS CAUSE EARLY SEASON UPSET

There’s no secret that the girls from Shark Park have had a tough start to their 2022 campaign, however Hillside have pulled off a massive win against premiership favourites Oak Park, defeating the Roos by eight points at home.

The Sharks led at every change and eventually held on for the 4.4.28-3.2.20 win. Having been stuck to the bottom of the Airport Toyota Women’s Premier Division for the first three weeks of the season, the win for Hillside propels them up to sixth, leapfrogging the winless Abefeldie and Burnside Heights.

For Oak Park, they have surrendered top spot to Westmeadows who remain the only undefeated side in the competition, but hold a healthy percentage and have been able to stay above Keilor and Moonee Valley.

Hillside have a chance to grab back-to-back wins when they face Aberfeldie at Clifton Park. For the Roos, they set up a massive 2nd vs 4th matchup away at Ormond Park against Moonee Valley.

JETS SEND MASSIVE STATEMENT AFTER DOWNING BULLDOGS

Greenvale has solidified themselves as premiership favourites in Airport Toyota Women’s Division One, defeating Gisborne by 23 points in an early season top the table clash.

It was a tough tussle throughout at Section Road, with the lead not exceeding one goal at any time from the beginning of the game until three quarter time. From there, Greenvale took the ascendancy and jetted away, scoring three goals whilst holding Gisborne scoreless in the final quarter to run out 7.5.47-3.6.24 winners.

Alisa Magri dominated up forward for the Jets, booting three goals and spurring Greenvale ahead. Brooke Grace, Charlotte Noonan and Ruby Watts all contributed with singles for the visitors, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.

The victory ensures that Greenvale are now the only undefeated side in the division, one game clear of both Strathmore and Gisborne at 4-0.

The Bulldogs will look to bounce back when they host Pascoe Vale at Gardiner Reserve, whilst Greenvale will be looking to continue their undefeated streak when they travel to Eric Boardman Reserve to face the Sunbury Kangaroos.

DEES HOLD ON UNDER LIGHTS

Tullamarine halted Airport West’s undefeated start in another top of the table clash, taking care of the Eagles by 11 points at Leo Dineen Reserve.

Airport West were admirable in defeat, but inaccuracy proved costly as the Demons held on for the 5.6.36-3.7.25 win.

A three goal to one second quarter in favour of Tullamarine allowed the girls from Leo Dineen to pull away to a 20 point lead at half time, before the Eagles peppered the goal in the third quarter whilst keeping the Demons scoreless.

Courtney Annett led the way with two goals for the Dees, whilst for the Eagles it was Chey Macumber who booted two goals to keep them in the game.

Tulla now move solely to top spot, and become the only side undefeated after four games in Airport Toyota Women’s Division Two. Airport West drop to second, and are equal on points with Coburg Districts.
