KEILOR has emerged as the new premiership favourite in Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division after handing Aberfeldie its first loss of the season on Saturday.

In what was the biggest game of the season to date, the undermanned Blues recovered from a slow start to eventually topple the Gorillas with a six-goal-to-one final term to claim a stirring 36-point win.

Dean Galea was again outstanding up forward with six goals, increasing his lead on the division’s goal-kicking table to 14, while skipper Kane Barbuto re-affirmed his status as the current Reynolds Medal favourite by claiming EDFL Match of the Day’s Meadows Greyhounds Best-On-Ground prize.

David Isbister and Brad Xavier were also impressive for the 6-0 Blues.

Aberfeldie was also undermanned with no Josh Cubillo or Caleb Hislop but did get good individual efforts from Jayden Foster (five goals), Kyle Reimers (three), Jaryd Cachia and Josh Toy.

The premiers slipped to third spot on the ladder following the loss, while Keilor sits on top as the last remaining undefeated team in the division.

Roys, Panthers Share Points At Sewell

THE season’s first draw took place at Sewell Reserve on Saturday.

It was a local derby between neighbouring Glenroy and Pascoe Vale and the more-fancied Panthers looked like they were on track to claim their third successive win after establishing a 32-point lead by the main break.

But in what was a scrappy and low-scoring affair, the Roys finally clicked into gear in the third quarter and booted seven unanswered goals to lead by nine points at the final change, before the Panthers steadied in the last to bring the game level by the final siren.

Lachie Ronaldson stood tall for Glenroy in the absence of Aaron Kite with four goals, while Matthew Watson did most of the heavy lifting for Pascoe Vale up forward with five.

Meanwhile, Luke Foster was again impressive for the fourth-placed Panthers.

The two premiership points collected by Glenroy could prove vital in their fight to stave off relegation, opening up a six-point gap on the winless Airport West.

Heights Too Good For Stars At Canning

SportsCast Highlights - Click here

AVONDALE Heights also took an important step toward fighting off relegation with a 20-point win over Essendon Doutta Stars at Canning Street.

Hisham Kerbatieh was again impressive with three crucial goals for the Heights in what was a low-scoring contest, while Jackson Robb and Sam Zito also starred as the hosts slowly edged clear of the Stars throughout the day.

Poor kicking plagued both sides, with the Stars failing to make the most of their forward entries early and the Heights struggling to convert late.

In-form Brodie Meyers was among Douttas’ best with three goals in the end, with defender Dalton Comito and midfielder Jordan Schroder also playing well for the 2-4 Stars.

This week they’ll be on the EDFL Match of the Day stage at home to Glenroy, while Avondale Heights will be the underdog away to Pascoe Vale.

The following round will see the Heights look to all but ensure survival from relegation away to Airport West, in what will also be an EDFL Match of the Day broadcast game.

Sharks Send Tigers Packing Despite Scoreless Last

HILLSIDE has sent the rest of Division 1 yet another reminder that it should not be taken lightly in the race to make the top four come season’s end.

The Sharks claimed their biggest scalp of the year at home to Westmeadows on Saturday, holding on late to claim a thrilling two-point win.

The win was set up in the first half, where Hillside booted nine goals to four to lead by 34 points at the main break.

But the in-form Tigers steadied in the second half and slowly mounted a comeback, keeping the Sharks scoreless in the last.

From there, the second-placed Demons went on to make a big statement against the much-hyped Cougars, booting 12 goals to four in the second half in what turned out to be a comfortable 42-point win - the exact same margin East Keilor lost to Westmeadows by the previous week.

The division’s best defensive unit kept Burnside Heights to just seven goals for the night, which included a donut for Josh Covelli, as they managed to break away from the Bears in the final term.

Keeping the Bears goalless in the last, Sunbury stormed home with five goals in the final term to remain on top of the ladder at 6-0 ahead of another huge game at home to third-placed Moonee Valley this coming Saturday.

Abers Remains Women’s Benchmark

IMMEDIATELY following the men’s game, the best two sides of EDFL Women’s - Premier went head-to-head as the heavens opened over Joe Brown Oval on Saturday evening.

Premiership favourite Aberfeldie entered the clash at Keilor with Siobhan Carlton back in the line-up but was still without Sophie Cachia and Jess Atta, giving the Blues a big sniff on their home deck.

It was a hard-fought and entertaining game, with both sides making the most of their forward opportunities throughout the night.

The visitors opened up a two-goal buffer during the third quarter, but Keilor refused to lay down and battled hard to keep up with Aberfeldie through to the end, eventually going down by 12 points.

The final margin was a significant improvement from Keilor’s 48-point Round 2 loss to Aberfeldie.

Olivia Madden and Alicia Reivers were both vital up forward for Abers with two goals apiece, while Lauren Caruso starred for the Blues, kicking one of her side’s four goals for the night.

Despite the slippery conditions, both sides remarkably maintained unblemished score lines from start to finish, combining for 10 goals straight without a single behind for the entire night.

Aberfeldie remains on top of the ladder at 6-0 while Keilor sits second at 5-2.
