STRATHMORE is within touching distance of the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division top four after getting the job done at Avondale Heights on Saturday.

It was a closely fought opening term at Canning Street before the Mores wrested control in the second, booting four goals to one to set the tone for the rest of the day.

In the end, Strathmore produced its best defensive performance of the year to restrict the Heights to just eight goals while kicking 13 of its own, claiming its second victory for 2019 by 41 points.

The Mores enjoyed an even spread of contributors up forward, with Kyle Weightman, Athan Tsialtas and Ben Holian all kicking two goals with ruckman Andrew Vavra named best-on-ground.

Tigers Topple Flag Contending Cougars

DIVISION 1 is all square at the top of the ladder after Westmeadows handed East Keilor its first loss for 2019 at Willowbrook Reserve.

Mitch Church returned to the line-up and booted four goals, while in-form sharpshooter Omar Saad kicked five of his own to help sink the Cougars in an impressive seven-goal win.

Dean Clare, who started the season with Pascoe Vale in Premier Division, also made his return to Westmeadows after transferring back to his former club earlier in the week and kicked a goal, while Aaron Evans and Ben Drummond both starred further up the ground.

Poor kicking dogged East Keilor throughout the day, ending the game with just two less scoring shots than the Tigers.

Dion Hill kicked three to maintain his lead at the top of the Division 1 goal kicking table.

The result now means no team remains undefeated in Division 1 and all top four clubs are equal on points, with percentage separating first (East Keilor) from fourth (Westmeadows).

From there the Magpies were able to keep Taylors Lakes at bay and managed to withstand the fast-finishing Lions, holding on in the last for a stirring 11-point win.

It was the younger brigade who stood tall for the home side, with Jarrio Guterres kicking two goals on debut alongside Jack Omogrosso.

Bears Tested, But Outlast Sharks

BURNSIDE Heights’ Friday night thriller against Hillside was the pick of the games out of the weekend in EDFL Women’s - Premier.

The much-improved Sharks travelled to Tenterfield Drive to play the 4-1 Bears and were able to match them for most of the night, with wayward kicking the only thing letting them down up forward.

As a result, Burnside Heights were able to break away in the third quarter and led by 22 points at three-quarter time, but Hillside stormed home with the only three goals of the final term.

With Ebony Wilkie producing a stellar performance that included two goals, the Sharks were brave in the last, but couldn’t kick that final goal to get over the top, falling two points short by the final siren.

Bears star Kayla Ravanello is now the division’s outright leading goal kicker with 18 majors after kicking three in a match-winning performance, with fellow 2018 Team of the Year member Krissy Trang officially named best-on-ground.

Despite the win, the Bears dropped to third on the ladder while Hillside remains fifth.
