Blues Down Jets Despite More Injury Woes

KEILOR will enter the Queen’s Birthday break on top of the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division ladder after mounting a stirring third quarter comeback to defeat Greenvale on Saturday.

The injury-depleted Blues trailed the Jets by 22 points during the third quarte at Joe Brown Oval and were without the services of the injured Alex Kocovic.

But they managed to recover and get within a point of the Jets by the final change, before booting five goals to three in the last quarter to score a nine-point win and stay undefeated on the season.

Playing against his former club for the first time and in only his second appearance for Keilor, Brett Stillman was best-on-ground alongside Brad Xavier and Stefan Radovanovic.

Dean Galea kicked three of Keilor’s 12 goals to remain the division’s leading goal kicker, 13 ahead of the third-placed Jacob Thompson, who kicked four for Greenvale.

The Jets are third on the ladder at 5-2.

ESSENDON Doutta Stars kept its slim finals hopes alive with a 26-point win over Glenroy in Saturday’s EDFL Match of the Day broadcast game.

The inaccurate Stars led at every change but saved their best for last, finishing the game with four goals to one in the final term to score their third win of the season and move within two wins of the top four.

With Alex Boyse still on the sidelines with an ongoing shoulder complaint, Mitch Day stood tall for the Stars with three goals alongside two each from Jordan Rogers and Jordan Schroder, who was given the Meadows Greyhounds Best-On-Ground gong by the EDFL call team.

Douttas youngster John Roumeliotis also made his long-awaited senior debut after recovering from his fourth knee re-construction.

Former Star Lachie Ronaldson was again the main go-to up forward for Glenroy, kicking three goals with Aaron Kite still missing from the line-up.

Glenroy remains second-last at 1-5-1 heading into the mid-season break.

Cougars Claim Division 1 Contender’s Scalp

EAST Keilor has silenced some of its critics by finally knocking off a Division 1 contender.

The Cougars hosted an undermanned and sluggish Craigieburn outfit at Overland Reserve and were able to re-discover some of their blistering form from earlier in the season, kicking nine goals to two in the first half to ice the game by half time.

The Eagles were able to add some respect to the scoreboard in the final quarter but the damage was done, with East Keilor claiming a 31-point win to move back into second spot on the table.

Ash Arrowsmith starred for the hosts and was among the goal kickers, while Dion Hill kicked three to draw level with Westmeadows’ Omar Saad on the Division 1 goal kicking table at 33 majors for the year.

Billy Morrison was Craigieburn’s best with four of his side’s nine goals.

The Eagles slipped to third spot on the ladder with another tricky fixture against Hillside coming up after the Queen’s Birthday break.

Burgers Breeze Past Winless Roos

WEST Coburg may have ended any threat of a double-relegation after handing Oak Park a 102-point drubbing at Shore Reserve on Saturday.

Playing their first game at their spiritual home for the year, the Burgers were relentless from the get-go and kicked five unanswered goals to start the game, before Oak Park steadied in the second.

West Coburg held the Kangaroos scoreless in the third quarter and had the game on ice by the final change, kicking nine more goals in the last to stretch the final margin into three figures.

Liam Bowkett continued his outstanding season with eight goals while Anastasis Dounias found his way onto the score sheet for the third consecutive week with three goals of his own.

Jordan Gloury was best-on-ground.

Oak Park is the last remaining winless side in Division 1, with Hillside and Roxburgh Park coming up after the Queen’s Birthday break.

Sunbury Confirms Division 2 Flag Favouritism

THE Sunbury Kangaroos have almost completed their sweep of Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 after cruising past Moonee Valley on Saturday.

In what may have been their most impressive win yet, the Kangaroos extended their lead over the Fog at every change in an impressive four-quarter performance, eventually winning by 48 points at Eric Boardman Reserve.

Michael Kilty and Josh Young both kicked four goals for the ladder-leading Roos, while Matt Quigley boosted his stocks with a best-on-ground display.

Moonee Valley entered the game without spearhead Rocky Ferraro and it showed on the scoreboard, with the visitors posting their lowest score for the year.

Jordan Faba kicked four of the Fog’s nine goals while the returning Braden Padmore was named their best player around the ground.

The loss saw Moonee Valley drop two spots on the ladder and will enter the mid-season break in fifth place.

The Kangaroos will complete their sweep on the division if they can knock over Coburg Districts in Round 9.

Abers Too Good At Sunbury

EDFL Women’s frontrunner, Aberfeldie, again rose to the challenge to edge past the Sunbury Kangaroos on Friday night.

Siobhan Carlton returned to the goal sheet with three goals as Abers slowly broke clear at Eric Boardman Reserve, recovering from a scoreless third quarter to kick the only two goals of the last and claim a hard-fought 25-point win.

Carlton was best-on-ground in what was Aberfeldie’s seventh consecutive win.

The Kangaroos were gallant but couldn’t match the scoring power of Aberfeldie’s spearhead.

Bronte Koutras kicked two of Sunbury’s three goals and Olivia Cairo was the best player in blue and white.

The loss saw Sunbury slip two spots down the ladder at 5-3, while Aberfeldie remains undefeated in top spot.

Undefeated Douttas Dominate Marby

ESSENDON Doutta Stars re-asserted itself as the team to beat in EDFL Women’s - Division 1 with a convincing 35-point win over Maribyrnong Park on Saturday.

After a wasteful opening stanza where they could only muster six behinds, the Stars clicked into gear in the second quarter with two unanswered goals, before going on to finish the job with a dominant second half display at Nipper Jordan Oval.

Tahlia Noonan did the damage up forward with two goals while Caesha Langborne and Sophie Fazzolari both starred with a goal of their own.

Theresa Murch was the Lions’ lone goal scorer while Alex Kilty was named best.

Due to various forfeits, the Stars are only second on the table dispite boasting two more wins than first-placed Moonee Valley, while Maribyrnong Park is in seventh spot at 3-5.
