AIRPORT West claimed its first Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division win since 2015 at home to Avondale Heights on Saturday.

The Eagles embraced the EDFL Match of the Day stage and flew out of the blocks to outscore Avondale Heights by six goals to four in an entertaining opening quarter to set a tone for the rest of the day.

After leading by 20 at half time, the previously winless Eagles piled on 11 goals to one in the second half to cruise their way to an 82-point win that could prove vital in their fight to avoid instant relegation back to Division 1.

Damandeep Aujla was again outstanding with four goals while the returning Anthony Aloi claimed the honours as the EDFL call team’s Meadows Greyhounds Best-On-Ground.

Josiah Garisto was the Heights’ best.

Despite the win, Airport West remains last on the table but could easily leapfrog the likes of Glenroy and Avondale Heights in the second half of the season.

Young Mores Outlast Depleted Jets

SportsCast Highlights - Click here

AN undermanned Strathmore side was too good for an equally undermanned Greenvale line-up at Section Road on Saturday.

The Mores came into the game without skipper Andrew Horne, Luke Baniowski, Nick Ingleton and Athan Tsialtas.

But the Jets had personnel issues of their own, with Jacob Thompson, Nat Caruso, Fort Caruso and David Sardo among their six changes from Round 7’s close loss to undefeated Keilor.

The end result was a closely fought arm wrestle that remained within a couple of kicks from start to finish, with Strathmore finishing the game strongly, kicking four goals to two in the final term.

That was enough for an important nine-point win that elevated the Mores into the top four at 5-3.

Strathmore teenager Will Jury starred up forward with five goals while Courtenay Dempsey stood tall in the absence of Thompson, booting three for the third-placed Jets.
