Blues Down Mores To Stay Perfect

DEAN Galea’s return from a hamstring injury could not have gone any better on Saturday.

The star Blues forward kicked three first quarter goals before Keilor broke clear from Strathmore in the second, establishing an unassailable 35-point buffer by half time at Joe Brown Oval.

By game’s end the Blues restricted Strathmore to just four goals for the game, with Brett Stillman’s tackling pressure earning him best-on honours in the 55-point win.

Galea was well supported up forward, with Dylan Joyce, Kane Barbuto, Matthew Clark and David Tonkich all kicking two goals for the day.

Sean Callander was Strathmore’s best with Shane Foulds kicking two goals to take his season tally to 17.

Keilor remains undefeated at 11-0 and looks to be in the box seat to claim the minor premiership, while Strathmore is still sitting outside the top four on percentage.

Lions Continue Their Rise Against Jets

MARIBYRNONG Park has forced itself into finals calculations after beating Greenvale at Monk Oval.

The in-form Lions started well with the only three goals of the opening quarter before Greenvale clicked into gear kicking to the scoring end in the second, booting five goals to one to lead by six points at the main break.

In tricky conditions, it remained a tight affair through to the final siren, but the Lions held on for a gritty 12-point win, their third in four games.

Jock Cornell starred up forward with four goals while experienced pair Jake Byrush and Scott Clarke were solid throughout the day.

Kurtis Sanajko was Greenvale’s best with three goals with the returning Jacob Thompson adding two more for the fourth-placed Jets.

At 5-6, Maribyrnong Park is now in touching distance of the top four with a favourable fortnight of fixtures against Airport West and Essendon Doutta Stars coming up next.

The out-of-form and undermanned Jets have lost four of their last five games.

Magpies Surge Late To Beat Sharks

ROXBURGH Park took another important step toward avoiding relegation with a determined 32-point win over Hillside at Lakeside Oval.

In what was an impressive response following a shocking 46-point loss at last-placed Oak Park seven days earlier, the Michael Farrelly-led Magpies stormed home with five goals to one in the final quarter to score their third win of the season.

It was tight early before Roxburgh Park got going in the second with four goals to one, leading by 24 points at half time.

The Sharks then made use of the scoring end in third but couldn’t convert their opportunities as the back line held Roxburgh Park scoreless.

Up by five points at three-quarter time, the Magpies were eventually able to put Hillside to the sword.

Luke Capuano and Jay Barbera were important in attack for Roxburgh Park with two goals each while Jamie Grant and Adrian MacKinnon were handy further up the ground throughout the day.

Hillside entered the game without in-form ruckman Lachie Rayner and David Fruscalzo, with midfield duo Victor Micallef and Jackson Volpato left to do much of the heavy lifting in good individual performances.

Roxburgh Park is now two wins clear of the relegation zone and a win this coming weekend on EDFL Match of the Day at Taylors Lakes should ensure safety.

The 6-6 Sharks now have their backs against the wall and face a very tough run home, with all four remaining opponents currently sitting above them on the ladder.

Demons Lose Top Spot At City Oval

WEST Coburg marked its mid-season improvement with an eye-catching 20-point win over flag fancy Tullamarine at Coburg City Oval.

The Burgers, who have won four of their last six games to keep their faint finals hopes alive, set the tone early with six goals to two in the opening quarter and never looked back, going on to keep the Demons at arm’s length for the rest of the day.

For the second time this year, Jesse Martini kicked three goals to help his side over the line as Mitchell Miller and Andrew Careri both provided good support with two goals each of their own.

Ryan Pretty was one of Tullamarine’s best with three goals in his side’s second loss of the season.

The four points collected by East Keilor for the bye helped knock the Demons out of top spot on the ladder with a big Round 16 clash at Overland Reserve looming between the two premiership contenders.

Districts Overcomes Bogey Bears At Home

A DOMINANT start and solid finish proved the difference for Coburg Districts at Cole Reserve on Saturday.

Facing a Burnside Heights team they have struggled against in recent times, the Lions produced a combined six-goal-to-one effort in the first and fourth quarters to get past the Bears by 32 points.

Trailing by 25 points at the half with spearhead Josh Covelli on the sidelines, Burnside Heights steadied with six goals to three in the third quarter, which included a four-goal burst within seven minutes of play.

But the margin remained 11 points in Districts’ favour entering the last and Burnside Heights could no longer penetrate at all, remaining scoreless in the final term while the Lions kicked three majors to stretch their winning margin beyond five goals.

Ben Fisher produced one of his better performances of the year with two goals in a best-on-ground display, while Danny Grantham was named the Bears’ best.

The 6-4 Lions remain one game clear of East Sunbury in fourth spot, while Burnside Heights is third at 7-4.

Keilor Wins Under Friday Night Lights

KEILOR ensured a top three finish in EDFL Women’s - Premier with a 21-point win over Strathmore at Joe Brown Oval.

The Blues kicked the only two goals of the first quarter and from there, never allowed Strathmore a sniff.

With Lisa Kirby (20 goals this season) and Laura Wright each kicking two goals for the night, Keilor was able to hold off a fast-finishing Strathmore side that managed to kick the only two goals of the final quarter.

Tanay Barbuto was best-on-ground with a goal of her own.

With Aberfeldie certain to win the minor premiership, Keilor can secure second spot by winning one of its two remaining games against battlers Sunbury Lions or Craigieburn.
