Avondale Heights have edged out Essendon Doutta Stars and put some breathing room between them and a possible relegation down to Rookie Me Division One after securing their second victory of the 2022 campaign.

Bouncing back after their loss against ladder leaders Aberfeldie, the Heights dominated early proceedings, opening a 28-point half time lead that would prove to be enough as they held on by 11 points.

Aaron Clarke continued his impressive month of football, booting another 5 goals bringing his year tally to an impressive 17 goals after only 4 games.

He was complemented by a season high 4 goals for Matt Darby, who continues to contribute up forward, kicking multiple goals in 6 of his last 7 outings.

For the Stars, multiple goals from Karl Brown, John Roumeliotis and Brodie Meyers weren’t enough to provide the winning edge as they now sit precariously in ninth position ahead of last placed Glenroy.

As we head into the split round, Avondale see themselves having a week off before a big clash against Keilor, their impressive form in the second half of the season looking to be enough to remain in the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division for another year.

The Stars face a trip down the highway to Greenvale, the win vital for both teams but imperative for the Stars if they wish to build back the breathing room lost to the relegation zone.
