ABERFELDIE has one-upped archrival Greenvale to start the 2021 season with a hard-fought 11-point win at Section Road.

A four-goal-to-one third quarter saw Aberfeldie break clear from the Jets after a scrappy slog-fest of a first half on Saturday.

A seven-point halftime lead had grown to 27 by the final change before Greenvale finally established some flow in the final term, but their deficit proved too much to overcome.

Jayden Foster finished with three goals for the visitors while star defender Josh Toy was the best player on the ground according to both Aberfeldie’s best players listed below and the EDFL Match of the Day call team.

Luke Davis was also named among Abers’ best for his role in limiting Jacob Thompson to two majors.

MARIBYRNONG Park held off a fast-finishing Glenroy to win a three-point thriller at Sewell Reserve on Saturday.

In what was a surprisingly high-scoring game given the windy conditions around the league, Sebastian Greene’s clutch set shot goal late in the final term was vital for the Lions as Nick Prowse booted five majors of his own in his return game for the club.

After a scrappy opening term, the Lions straightened up in the second with six goals to Glenroy’s four to establish a nine-point halftime lead.

Their momentum in front of goal continued in the third quarter and by three-quarter time the lead was out to 22, but the hosts re-established control in the last and made a late run for the four points.

Despite getting good output from forwards Aaron Kite (four goals), Adam Del Busso (three) and Lachie Ronaldson (three), Glenroy fell agonisingly short of victory by game’s end.

Jackson Griffin was Marby’s best performer, kicking one goal for the day.

Star-Studded Cougars Deliver At Willowbrook

EAST Keilor didn’t waste too much time putting Westmeadows to the sword on Saturday, cruising to a 63-point win at a packed Willowbrook Reserve.

The Cougars piled on 11 goals to one in the first half to essentially ice the game by the main break, but Westmeadows did show some heart in the second half to add some respect to the scoreboard.

All eyes were on Collingwood premiership player Heath Shaw, who found himself running with reigning Hutchison Medallist Robbie Castello early in the game.

Without accumulating a huge amount of ball, Shaw’s on-field leadership in the back half was evident.

Castello limped off the ground in what was a costly third quarter on the injury front for both sides.

Play was halted shortly before three-quarter time after East Keilor captain Vince Madaffari suffered what appeared to be a nasty arm injury.

By game’s end Dion Hill was the leading goal kicker on the ground with five goals for East Keilor while Mitch Church was among the Tigers’ better performers with three.
