Airport Toyota Women’s Weekend Outlook - Round 5, 2022

By Tara Murray

After a weekend where things were tossed on their head, there will be matches across all three Airport Toyota Women's divisions this weekend that will have everyone’s attention.

Having seemingly had a fair read on the Airport Toyota Women's Premier Division competition, it was Hillside that shook things up.

Sitting bottom, the Sharks knocked off the previously undefeated Oak Park side, to say hey, we are a team that can’t be forgotten about.

Now with that win on the board, the Sharks could quite easily make it two in a row, against Aberfeldie, which remains without a win.

It was the likes of Lisa Parisi and Alyssa Cook, who stood up for the Sharks last week, and if their stars fire they will be hard to beat.

For Abers, they need a four quarter performance. Their best two performances have seen them match it with sides for half a game, but at this level it isn’t enough.

Keilor will go in favourites against Burnside Heights.

Outside of their loss to Westmeadows, the Blues have shown little to say they won’t be there at the pointy end of the season.

This season they seem to be scoring more freely, with Olivia Manfre providing a key target up forward.

She now has 10 goals for the season in just three matches.

For the Bears it has been tough going.

They have been comprehensively beaten outside of Round 1, with the side not having the depth as some of the other sides.

Brodie Stevens and Krissy Trang have been stars for the side but they need a bit more support.

After a slow start, Moonee Valley has started to show signs that they belong at this level.

They were in the mix to get a second straight win last week against Maribyrnong Park, but had to settle on splitting the points after a lengthy injury delay saw the EDFL rule the game a draw.

They will be tested this week against Oak Park.

The Kangaroos were surprisingly disappointing against the Sharks. While they were missing a few players, on the form shown by both sides this season they were expected to get the win.

The character of the Kangaroos will be on show this week on how they respond after the last performance.

In the match of the round, Westmeadows will host Maribyrnong Park.

The Tigers have done little wrong this season and have been able to find a large spread of contributors this season.

Consistency has been the key for the side, something they’ve lacked previously.

Maribyrnong Park is a side that you can’t write off.

They are a side that has a wide spread of players, who play their roles week in, week out.

In Airport Toyota Women's Division One, it’s the Sunbury Kangaroos and Greenvale match up that is the most interesting.

Nearly 200 points was the margin between these two sides when they faced off in round one last year.

A lot has changed since then. The Kangaroos are a different team, while the Jets have continued to improve.

The Jets, after beating Gisborne last week, are rightly the premiership favourites. They have plenty of goal kickers with Alisa Magri, Haylea Cooke and Amy Hakim filling the top three spots in the competition goal kicking.

Gisborne will be hoping to bounce back this week against Pascoe Vale. The Bulldogs got a first eye look at the Jets last week and what they need to do to be the best in the competition.

After a slow start the Panthers are starting to find some consistency. They got a much needed win against Moonee Valley.

Former Bulldog Marilyn Elder will be one to watch after kicking five for the Panthers in their win.

Moonee Valley 2 and Strathmore will play-off against each other at Ormond Park.

The Mores will be hoping to continue on with their momentum against a Moonee Valley team that is yet to get a win.

The Fog will be hoping that Georgia Marsland will be back this week to provide such much needed leadership.

In the last game of the round, the Sunbury Lions will face Essendon Doutta Stars.

The Stars didn’t lose any fans in their loss to Strathmore. They showed they aren’t far off the top few sides.

Meg Runting again led the way, while the debut of Neve Crowley had plenty of people excited.

The Lions found the going tough against their cross town rivals, the Sunbury Kangaroos.

While they were able to keep the scoreboard close early, the Kangaroos' strength proved too much.

With the Stars having recently defeated the Kangaroos, they will go in favourites for this match.

Coburg Districts and Oak Park will both return to the field this weekend in Airport Toyota Women's Division Two.

The Lions, who had a loss in their last match, had the bye last week.

Oak Park is one of two teams that hasn’t played since Round 1. They’ve forfeited their last two games due to being short of numbers.

Let’s hope they can get out there this week.

Tullamarine has stamped itself as premiership favourites after beating Airport West last week.

For the Demons, this is the first of their matches against a second side as they face Maribyrnong Park.

The Lions will be looking to bounce back after a couple of losses.

Westmeadows will go in as favourites against the Sunbury Kangaroos.

The Tigers experience has shone through this season and is clearly the best second side.

Last week, the Kangaroos got the four points after Oak Park forfeited. For the Kangaroos, they will be keen to get back out on the field having not played since round one.
