Airport Toyota Women’s Weekend Outlook - Round 3, 2022

By Tara Murray

Two weeks seems a long time in football, as the training and games were swapped for Easter eggs and holidays.

Now the focus is back on the footy field, with plenty of good games scheduled for this weekend.

While most players had the weekend off, for Keilor and Hillside Round 3 got underway last week.

The Blues returned to the winners list after a rare loss against Westmeadows the previous week.

The Blues proved too strong after quarter time to run away with a solid win.

After three rounds, it’s starting to show that the Sharks aren’t the team they were the last couple of years.

Without the depth of previous years, they’re struggling to match it with the top sides.

Speaking of top sides, Westmeadows is one side putting its hand up early in the season.

The Tigers have been impressive so far, knocking off Hillside and Keilor, who were the top two teams last year.

The Tigers will this week face a winless Aberfeldie and should be confident of getting the win if early season form is anything to go by.

For Abers, hopes they had done enough in the off season to get back in the mix are yet to come to fruition.

Abers has found it hard to score in their opening two matches, with a total of 17 points.

Most teams will struggle to win without being able to put that scoreboard pressure on.

Oak Park against Maribyrnong Park looks to be one of the matches of the round in Airport Toyota Women's Premier Division.

Both sides are undefeated and have really good percentages, with this match to give a better idea of where they sit.

The Kangaroos have plenty of talent and they have been able to spread the load. They have six players who have already scored multiple goals, led by Ebony Bennett.

It’s a similar story for the Lions, with five players having scored multiple goals. Gabrielle Mahoney, who has kicked five goals, has been one of their best.

Burnside Heights and Moonee Valley shapes as another interesting contest. The Fog got a win on the board in Round 2, while the Bears are yet to record one.

Both sides have a lot of top end talent, so they key will be who can step up from the lesser likes.

In Airport Toyota Women's Division One, Gisborne will kick off the weekend’s action against a Sunbury team for the second time in as many rounds.

The Bulldogs were really strong in their win against the Sunbury Kangaroos, playing well structured football.

Claire Bourdon, who was among the best players in the division last season, continues to impress.

This week they face the Sunbury Lions, who are coming off their first win of the season. While the Lions showed some good signs against Moonee Valley 2, the question is whether they can match it with one of the top sides.

Amy Starzer has fitted in quite well and really made an impact.

The Sunbury Kangaroos will be looking to bounce back against the Essendon Doutta Stars. After a big win first up, they were given a reality check against Gisborne.

The Stars also suffered a loss to the Bulldogs in Round 1, so this match up will give more of an idea where teams are at. The Stars will return to the field after having not played the last two weeks with Pascoe Vale not having the numbers.

Pascoe Vale will be hoping a week off was enough time to get some reinforcements after forfeiting.

The task won’t be an easy one as they face Strathmore. The Mores are coming off a rare loss in the last two seasons against a strong Greenvale side.

The Mores will go into this match as favourites and will look to use last round’s loss to get even better.

Greenvale has stamped itself as one of the teams to beat, after accounting for Strathmore in the recent round.

The Jets depth has been on show. Haylea Cooke has kicked seven goals in two rounds, while Tiera Fry has starred since crossing from the Sunbury Lions.

The Jets will be keen to continue that run against Moonee Valley 2. The Fog have found the going tough after moving up a division with a number of players still learning the game.

The Fog will need to find some more options in front of goal if they are to kick a score to match the Jets.

It’s been a long time coming, but Tullamarine will finally get the opportunity to play for premiership points in Airport Toyota Women's Division Two.

After a bye in round 1, then a forfeit in Round 2 and then Easter, it's been a long time coming for the Demons.

It won’t be an easy first up task against Coburg Districts. The Lions have won their first two games and showed further signs of development and will be full of confidence.

Grace Ingram in her first season at the Lions has been one of the keys early on for the Lions.

It’s the battle of two of the second sides with Maribyrnong Park and the Sunbury Kangaroos.

Both sides will be looking for their first wins of the season.

Improvement on their first couple of rounds should be on the cards, with more games and training under their belts.

The final match of the round is one of the more interesting.

Airport West has started the season really strong with two good wins and a massive percentage to boot.

The Tigers are one of the more experienced second sides, which should be a good test for the Eagles.

Expect the Tigers to hold the Eagles to account.
