Airport Toyota Women’s Weekend Outlook - Round 2, 2022

By Tara Murray

After months of unknown, some of the questions have been answered in the Airport Toyota Women's competition.

Which teams had kept all their players, would the pandemic have an impact on players numbers and a first look at clubs that had been promoted and relegated.

While Round One resulted in a number of one sided matches, Round Two has a number of mouth watering clashes.

Keilor and Westmeadows were two of the most impressive teams first up with big wins against Moonee Valley and Hillside respectively.

Round One showed that Keilor had retained most of its list from last season and would again be among the contenders.

It was some of the younger stars in Olivia Manfre and Laura Wright who stood up in Round One.

For the Tigers it was the experience that showed through.

The likes of Taylor Jones, Gemma Wright and Jacinta Scott were all really good.

The Tigers have shown they can play some good football in recent times, but consistency has been the issue.

Facing the Blues is the perfect test to see where they are at.

While Keilor and Westmeadows showed some really good form in Round One, it was a lot tougher for Aberfeldie and Moonee Valley.

Abers were kept goalless in Round One which wasn’t the ideal start, while the Fog struggled in their first game in the Airport Toyoto Women's Premier Division.

There is still a lot of unknowns about these two teams and how they shape up.

This might give some more answers on where they are at.

Hillside’s result against Westmeadows was the most surprising of Round One.

The result itself wasn't a surprise, but the margin was.

The Sharks are a different looking side to last year, but was Round One a case of what is to come or a blimp on the radar?

They will have to be switched on against Maribyrnong Park.

The Lions are one of the less assuming sides that continue to get the job done.

Roselyn Buje was the star in Round One and will be a key for them this year.

A win here for the Lions would show they are a side that will be in the finals mix.

The last match sees Burnside Heights take on Oak Park.

The Bears top line talent led by Krissy Trang were really good in Round One, but will that be enough for them to get wins against the top sides?

That question will be answered against Oak Park.

The Kangaroos are stacked with talent and managed to keep Aberfeldie goalless in Round One.

These are the matches the Kangaroos need to win, and win big, to get the percentage up.

In Airport Toyota Women's Division One, the four winners from last week face off and the four losers will play each other.

While last week gave an early indication where some teams sit, this week presents some more interesting matches.

The Sunbury Kangaroos and Gisborne will face each other for the first time in an official match.

Both sides showed good signs in the opening round with big wins.

Lisa Borg in her first game for the Kangaroos kicked five goals and the Kangaroos had a number of different targets up forward.

Borg will be keen for a good showing against her old side.

It was the Bulldogs familiar faces that stood strong in their opening win in the likes of Charlotte Nelson, Claire Bourdon and Brianna Woodburn.

The Strathmore versus Greenvale match is very intriguing in this division.

Both sides were set for finals last season and have recruited well.

New faces in Alissa Magri and Teira Fry had instant impacts for the Jets, while the likes of Elosie Freeman, Chiara Guarino and Clara Toperosa were again leading from the front for the Mores in Round One.

The EDFL experts had both these teams in the mix for top spot, so this should be a cracker of a match.

Essendon Doutta Stars and Pascoe Vale both struggled for numbers in Round One and couldn't field 18 on the field last weekend.

Coming down from the Premier Division, the Stars should have the upper hand with the likes of Alesha Hobbs, but expect a hard fought match.

Moonee Valley 2 hosts the Sunbury Lions in the other match.

Both sides were comprehensively beaten in Round One, as changes in personnel showed.

Georgia Marsland starred for the Fog in Round One and will be their key.

This matchup will give a better idea of where the teams are at.

In Airport Toyota Women's Division Two, it’s three first teams playing three reserves teams.

On paper, the firsts teams will all go in as favourites.

We get our first look at Tullamarine this season, as the Demons take on Oak Park 2.

The Kangaroos are one of the stronger second teams and will be one to watch this season.

The Demons have added a few and with plenty of experience should be capable of putting several wins on the board.

Airport West made a statement in the opening round against the Sunbury Kangaroos 2 and we could expect more of the same against Maribyrnong Park 2.

The final match of the division two competition is the most interesting of the three.

Coburg Districts got on the board in Round One, as did Westmeadows 2.

Depending on the side the Tigers put out, this could be one of the closer matches of the round.
