Airport Toyota Women’s Weekend Outlook - June 16th, 2022

By Tara Murray

The Airport Toyota Women’s competition continues to throw up surprises each week as we get to the pointy end of the season.

With several clubs boosted by the return of VFLW players, the standard is getting higher as the matches become more unpredictable.

In Airport Toyota Women's Premier Division, all four matches will help shape the top four.

After a week off for all teams, there should be some well rested players.

Aberfeldie against Moonee Valley is one of those matches, where the two sides are very similar.

Both slow starters with plenty of potential.

The longer the season has gone on the better both these teams have become.

Abers have won three of their last four games and are now starting to knock on the door of the top four,

The likes of Elisha Wain, who has been named in the best in all but two matches, will be key in the next run of matches.

The Fog is coming off a loss to Keilor, but they reduced the gap from Round 1. Madeline Price, who has only played two matches, is one player the Fog will be looking forward to having a big second half of the season.

Maribyrnong Park and Hillside is another match that has big ramifications for both sides.

For the Lions, a win can increase the gap on the teams below them and further cement that fourth spot.

The Sharks are the most unpredictable team in the competition. A last up win against Westmeadows, showed that when they are good, they’re very good.

The likes of Emily Paterno, Nikita Wright and Hannah Ibrahim returning from VFLW was always going to help too.

Oak Park against Burnside Heights seems the most straightforward of the matches in Premier Division.

The Kangaroos should have too much fire power for the Bears, who sit bottom. If the Bears can put it together for four quarters, they might be able to push them.

The last match of the round, is probably the most interesting with Westmeadows hosting Keilor.

The Tigers are the only team to knock off the Blues so far, but their form in the last weeks has been patchy.

The Tigers have the ability, but can they put it together? For the Blues, this is one they want to get back.

With the likes of Kaitlyn O’Keefe returning from VFLW commitments, they’ve only got stronger.

In Airport Toyota Women's Division One, there’s a couple of local rivalries that headline this round, along with the top four all playing each other.

But first is the battle between the bottom two teams.

This shapes as the Fog’s best chance of getting some points on the board, as they aim to beat Pascoe Vale.

The Fog have had some really good patches of play, but haven’t been able to put it together for four quarters.

Alexandria Caddy, Isabella Theodosis and Lily Wood have been keys for the Fog. They’ll need to stand up again this week.

For the Panthers, the first focus is getting a team back on the park. They forfeited their third match in the last round.

The top four then play each other.

Strathmore hosts Essendon Doutta Stars, while Gisborne will face Greenvale.

The first time round these two matches were won by Strathmore and the Jets respectively.

The question is, has the gap closed between the top two and the next two?

These two matches give a greater insight into the premiership race and go a long way to locking up top two spots.

The final match of the round, is the local Sunbury derby, with the Sunbury Kangaroos hosting the Sunbury Lions.

The Kangaroos were the better team last time and won convincingly. But the Lions took the points after the Kangaroos were stripped of them.

It’s one game both teams always look forward to, but has a little bit of added spice after last time.

In Airport Toyota Women's Division Two, the top three sides will be looking to add more wins to their season totals.

Airport West hosts Maribyrnong Park and results so far have shown that the Eagles have had big wins against the bottom three teams.

Coburg Districts against Westmeadows, is the most interesting game of the three. It’s third against fourth and last time only five points separated them.

Can the Tigers be the first second team to beat a top side this season?

The last match is Oak Park and Tullamarine. The two teams are yet to meet this season with the Kangaroos forfeiting earlier in the year.

After another forfeit in the last round, the Kangaroos first aim will be getting on the park. The Demons will be hoping to remain undefeated.
