Round 5 Preview - Essendon Ford Division 1

By JACK BURNS

Hillside v Westmeadows

THE Sharks will line up with a clear intent to remain undefeated against a fresh-legged Westmeadows side.

Continuing to silence the doubters, Steve Burns’ men were able to get the one-up in another tight affair against Oak Park, applying their ability to stand tall in big games.

Vice-Captain Victor Micallef was dominant not only around the stoppages, but more importantly in front of goal as he slotted another four, taking his season tally to 12 after four games.

Westmeadows is hoping to benefit from the week off after they fell short to Glenroy on Anzac Day.

Youngster Aaron Evans utilised his leg speed and skill on the football to prove a threat around goal, walking away from Sewell Reserve three goals richer and full of confidence.

Another defining test for the Sharks as they look to roll on as outright leaders of the division, whereas the Tigers are striving to regain some form and get back on track.

Taylors Lakes v East Keilor

Showing signs of finals-worthy football, Taylors Lakes are beginning to fulfil their potential and aspire to continue their clean run of form against the Cougars.

Bagging eight alongside his 11 fellow goal-kickers, the penny dropped for new Lions recruit James McGrath in a lack-lustre game at Martin Reserve.

Kicking 29 out of a possible 57, Taylors Lakes showed their hunger in the forward half, however they did bring to light that such a large amount of wasted opportunities won’t go so unnoticed in their upcoming fixtures.

As the Lions walked away with the most amount of goals in Round 4, East Keilor were unfortunate in concluding their fixture kicking the least, showing a poor ratio of four goals and 16 behinds.

Ash Arrowsmith’s men failed to follow up their immense effort against the Sharks, as they de-railed in a disappointing loss against the Eagles.

The Cougars are eager to take the chocolates at Lionheart Reserve, however an in-form Taylors Lakes will have other ideas.

Airport West v Oak Park

A confident Airport West outfit will host an angered and bitter Oak Park who are eager to bite back after their nine-point loss to the Sharks.

The youth of the Eagles cattle led the way in front of the big sticks as they ran away with a 54-point win against the Cougars.

Tyson Young added three more goals to his tally, proving how dangerous he can get in the forward half of the ground.

Oak Parks’ Blair Cronin had Hillside’s defence in all sorts, particularly in the first half of the game and was able to finish off with five majors.

Although Cronin’s prowess in front of goal was influential, it wasn't enough to get the Oakers over the line as they ran out of legs late in the game.

Two very even sides on paper will battle it out for a vital set of four points at Hansen Reserve in what looks to be a goal-for-goal game.

Tullamarine v Hadfield

An out-of-sorts Hadfield will travel to Leo Dinner Reserve up against a Tullamarine outfit that is lacking belief and assertiveness as of recent performances.

Given the opportunity to buy back some pride and composure, the Demons will be on the hunt for a convincing win over the Hawks.

Patrick Fairhead stood up for his undermanned team as he added two goals to his account amidst a 169-point thrashing at the hands of Taylors Lakes.

Tullamarine showed signs of dominance in their first half against the Roys as they were addressed at quarter time three goals to the good.

Slotting five in the first and only three for the remainder of the game, the Demons were weak and lacked conviction in attack.

Both sides will be searching of a crucial win to get their seasons back on track.
