Essendon District Football League and Western Football Netball League Announce Co-operation Agreement to Strengthen Community Football.
The Essendon District Football League (EDFL) and the Western Football Netball League (WFNL) are pleased to announce a strategic agreement aimed at fostering the growth and development of community football across both Leagues.
This collaboration is set to bring increased stability and opportunity to member clubs, with a focus on enhancing the experience and success of players, coaches, and supporters alike.
The agreement between the EDFL and WFNL outlines key measures designed to strengthen the structure and sustainability of the competitions.
Key points include:
- Ensuring stability: This agreement will provide both the WFNL and EDFL with a stable framework regarding the composition of their major men’s competitions, helping clubs, players, and fans enjoy greater continuity in their local football experience.
- Club transfer applications paused: As part of this agreement, applications from clubs to join either League will be temporarily paused. This will allow both Leagues to monitor and assess the ongoing changes to competition structures and better support the evolution of local football. Post this initial two-year period, the Leagues have committed to continued upfront dialogue about potential club movement applications.
- Women’s football development: EDFL and WFNL will collaborate on initiatives focused on increasing participation, improving facilities, and providing pathways for female players to advance in the sport. By pooling resources and expertise, both Leagues aim to create robust infrastructure that will sustain the long-term growth of women’s football across affiliated clubs.
With the signing of the Agreement, which has the full support of AFL Victoria, the EDFL and WFNL are embarking on a new phase of co-operation, reinforcing their dedication to community football and the positive impact it has on players, fans, and local communities.
“This agreement reflects our commitment to supporting the long-term stability of the EDFL competition,” said Bernie Shinners, EDFL Chair. "By working closely with the WFNL, we’re ensuring that the clubs and communities involved can continue to grow, thrive, and experience a high standard of football."
Both Leagues remain committed to working closely with member clubs, supporters, and local partners to drive the growth of the sport at all levels.
Meredith Angwin, WFNL President said, “This allows the WFNL to strengthen our competition structure in the new 12-and-12 team competition format, providing a solid foundation for future development. Working with the EDFL to grow female football participation is a positive step for our competitions.”
“AFL Victoria is pleased to support the co-operation between these two Victorian metro leagues to enable continued growth of community football in the north and west regions of Melbourne,” said Greg Madigan, Head of AFL Victoria. "The Leagues are to be congratulated on taking this step to enhance interleague co-operation, for the betterment of local footy."
