EDFL Women’s Weekend Outlook - Thursday May 16, 2024

Presented by Airport Toyota

Moonee Valley will host a rampaging, undefeated Hillside outfit at Ormond Park to kick off the top flight.

The Fog will be fresh from a week off with their last game a tough outing against Oak Park.

Hillside meanwhile have enjoyed two strong wins consecutively against the 2023 grand finalists to prove their finals credentials.

Moonee Valley is currently sitting sixth but their percentage is a concern, so coach Lee Newman will be keen to stop the offensive prowess the Sharks have displayed thus far.

An intriguing clash looms between Aberfeldie and Essendon Doutta Stars at Aberfeldie Park West.

The two blues have already lost more games than the 2023 season while Essendon Doutta Stars have been enjoying life in the top flight with three wins from four games.

Aberfeldie introduced new talent in the offseason and may require some time to gel with their two losses coming against Oak Park and Hillside.

Essendon Doutta Stars will head into the clash eager to prove their finals credentials in what’s looking like a more open top flight than 2023.

Their loss came at the hands of Oak Park but they were able to knock off Marby in convincing fashion who came within four points of Abers.

Maribyrnong Park will host Oak Park at Walsh Oval as they have a chance to draw level with the Kangaroos on points.

The Lions have impressed outside of a Round 1 defeat with good wins against Moonee Valley and Westmeadows, while falling within a kick of Aberfeldie in a nailbiter.

Tegan Matthews has led the way for the Lions kicking 14 goals from four games to sit second on the league goal kicking leaderboard and will be a key matchup for Lessey Hodgkinson and Nic Cook.

The Kangaroos have been at the level we’ve expected outside of a loss to Hillside and will look to create separation on the ladder with the Lions.

Keilor and Westmeadows will be looking for their first win of the season when they take each other on at Joe Brown Oval.

It goes without saying it’s been a tough start to the year for both sides with neither side breaching the five-goal deficit mark with their opponents.

Who can get their season going this Saturday?

A potential grand final preview will feature at Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve when the Bears take on Greenvale for the second time this season.

Burnside Heights ran away with a strong 48-point victory that day on the back of a dominant final quarter where they kicked five unanswered goals.

They boasted a range of goal kickers that day and held Alisa Magri goalless.

While it was a disappointing start for the Jets, they’ve taken off since then with four wins by 11 goals or more.

Magri has found some form which is always an ominous sign for opposition defenders, while Troy Newton will have similar headaches with Kayla Ravanello and Ebony Stevens up the other end.

Terira Fry and Krissy Trang will be must-watch footy as they will no doubt go head-to-head in the engine room.

Airport West and Keilor Park will meet each other at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve for their second meeting of the season.

The Eagles will be keen to carry the momentum from a strong win last week into this week, while Keilor Park will want to get back on the winner’s list after a loss to Burnside Heights.

Airport West took the four points the last time they met with a 56-point victory at Etzel Street Reserve.

The Devils have since gotten some wins under their belt with more time to gel for the brand new team and will be aiming for a much different result this time out.

Strathmore/Pascoe Vale continue to search for their first win of the season when they face Tullamarine at Boeing Reserve.

Tulla meanwhile are yet to register a win since their Round 1 triumph over Strathmore/Pascoe Vale and will see this as a great opportunity to do so.

Roxburgh Park will take on Glenroy for the second time this season when they meet at Lakeside Reserve.

The Magpies took the four points in that contest with a 15-point win and will have since gained some confidence with a competitive performance against Taylors Lakes last week which saw them leading at the final break.

Glenroy will be taking similar confidence from their win last week against East Sunbury, their first for the season and an emphatic win.

Roxy’s inaccuracy kept Glenroy in the game in Round 1, but with both sides no doubt improving since their first game, this game could go anywhere.

Taylors Lakes and Sunbury Lions will meet for the first time when they play at Lionheart Reserve.

Sunbury Lions have established themselves as the team to beat with a dominant start to the season, while Taylors Lakes have shown they could be present come finals time.

Taylors Lakes will need to shut down an array of goal scorers with Natachia Abela (18 goals) and Bianca Pepper (13 goals) leading the way not just for Sunbury, but across the league.

The local rivalry returns with East Sunbury hosting Sunbury Kangaroos at John McMahon Recreation Reserve.

Sunbury Kangaroos took a big win in their last contest as they piled on 33 scoring shots and will go in as favourites.
