Strathmore Community Bank Men's Weekend Outlook - Round 5

By Adam Russell

A tantalising contest just got that much more interesting.

The last time Aberfeldie and Keilor both suffered defeat on the same weekend was round 9 2014, now the two sides face their first back-to-back defeats since 2018.

For years Aberfeldie and Keilor have reigned supreme as the two strongest contenders in Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division, this weekend they have everything to play for.

After a strong performance on Good Friday, Keilor have fraught with danger claiming several close wins despite missing key personnel.

Dean Galea and Nick O'Kearney are among the few missing for the Blues and are players who relish playing on the big stage if they return.

Galea's usual sparring partner in Ryan Allen has found a new home after the defender-cum-forward proved to be a pivotal cog in Adam Potter's front half.

The key target is Abers' leading goal scorer after snagging a bag of five last week.

The division's ladder leader, Strathmore, has shown no mercy the last three weeks.

The Mores have chalked up a trio of 100-plus-point margin victories and will have Maribyrnong Park in their sights next.

While Marby will still be riding the high of its victory against Aberfeldie, Strathmore will prove to be another tough test for Brad Swain's team.

The Lions' defence has not been their surest aspect this season, conceding the fourth most points so far.

However, with Brandon Ryan and Nick Prowse in its forward line, if the game turns into a shoot-out, Marby might fancy itself to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Athan Tsialtas and Kyle Weightman at the other end.

Greenvale has gotten its season back on track after levelling its form line at 2-2.

The Jets will travel to Nipper Jordan Oval to take on Essendon Doutta Stars, where Darren Bewick will be hoping to make it three wins on the trot.

Avondale Heights' see-sawing season heads to DS Aitken Reserve as it faces Craigieburn.

The Eagles looked lively early last week when they lead Pascoe Vale at quarter-time.

Although, it quickly unravelled for Lance Whitnall's team, only scoring another goal for the rest of the contest.

Speaking of the Panthers, they'll go head-to-head with Glenroy at Sewell Reserve.

The competition's leading goal scorer, Matthew Watson, made a statement last week against Craigieburn, kicking eight goals and will be looking to dine out again against a vulnerable Roys backline.

In Strathmore Community Bank Division One, Airport West and Roxburgh Park are two sides vying to keep up with the competition's pace setters.

Both sides sit at 2-2 just outside the top four.

The recruitment of Raaf Rachrache and Matt Patane has provided immediate dividends for the Magpies.

The two spearheads have lead the way up forward for Roxy and may be their best chance of taking it up to the relegated Eagles.

Airport West are a well balanced side, though, and will take some beating at home.

Taylors Lakes is in a tight spot and it doesn't get any easier as it travels to Shore Reserve on Saturday.

West Coburg has been impenetrable at the 'Shoretress' so far this season and baring a hiccup in round one, Dale May's side has clicked into gear nicely.

Karl Staudt has put together an impressive season far to go alongside the big names of Lynden Dunn, Daniel Archer and Liam Bowkett.

After their first win of the season last week, Rupertswood faces a tough challenge in Tullamarine.

David Connell's team will be desperate for a win after lowering their colours to rivals Westmeadows in the week just gone.

The Sunbury Kangaroos play host to East Keilor, with the Cougars looking very dangerous at the moment.

Pat Christofi unleashed Chris Stewart over the weekend in a best-on-ground performance and the ruckman is only just getting started.

With a number of clubs sitting 3-1 on the division one ladder, don't be surprised if the Cougars are out for blood this weekend.

Finally, Westmeadows welcomes Hillside to Willowbrook Reserve as the Tigers strive to consolidate a top four position.

The Sharks have had a tough run since their round one victory.

Mo Kaakour's side will head in favourites but expect the Sharks to put in a competitive effort, as they have all season.

Strathmore Community Bank Division Two shapes to be an interesting weekend with a flurry of teams desperate to climb up the ladder.

Hadfield did its percentage a favour last week to rocket them up to second on the division two ladder.

They'll take on Keilor Park who will be looking recapture some of its Good Friday form.

Since their win over Coburg Districts, the Devils have suffered back-to-back losses then sat out last week with the bye.

East Sunbury will play host to Moonee Valley when the Fog makes the longest road trip of division two.

Shanon Carroll has the Valley ticking along nicely after a statement win last week against Oak Park.

The black-and-white defence has stood up strong so far this season with the likes of Liam Sabri, Tony Ciancio and Michael Bourke patrolling the back-half.

Cooper McPharlane has been in stirring goal-kicking form for the Thunder, but may find the going tough up at Goonawarra this weekend.

Oak Park will be looking to bounce back from its defeat last week when Coburg Districts comes to play.

The Lions breathed a sigh of relief last week when they finally registered their first win of the year, but will have to back it up against a highly talented Kangaroos outfit.

And the Northern Saints should be hopeful of levelling their win-loss form line when they face Jacana at home.
