AIRPORT WEST 9.5-59 def. by TAYLORS LAKES 15.10-100
WHILE this was the EDFL’s radio game, it was also Airport West’s Inaugural Indigenous Recognition game.
So it was a big day for the Eagles.
The home side sat one game ahead of Taylors Lakes in fourth spot prior to the weekend. Now the two will fight for the finals spot after the visitors won an important game.
Taylors Lakes looked comfortable from the first bounce with Airport West not converting a major in the first quarter compared to Taylors Lakes’ three.
From there it was an uphill battle for the rest of the game for the Eagles.
James Vistarini starred again, featuring in the best for the third week in a row and kicking six goals on his way to the RAWFORM Seamless Compression Player of the Day prize.
There were some good signs for Airport West, with young players Jack Formosa and Ronnie Hackney performing well again.
But the question remains, who will grab fourth spot and make finals?
HILLSIDE 32.24-216 def. HADFIELD 6.6-42
Another tough week for Hadfield saw Hillside take a 26-goal win at Shark Park on the weekend.
Hillside got the jump early, kicking seven goals to one in the first quarter, which proved it was going to be a tough day for the visitors.
Hadfield’s backline had their work cut out for them, with the Sharks forward line of Victor Micallef, Jake Hazik and Rocky Ferraro kicking 15 goals between them.
As Hadfield’s season is pretty much over, it may have given Hillside the extra bit of confidence they needed to continue their strong 2017 season.
Sitting third on the ladder and two games clear, their finals campaign is looking bright.
And with a relatively easy run home, Hillside have every chance of making the top two.
Patrick Fairhead and Harley Ferguson both played well again for Hadfield, yet again being named among the Hawks’ best.
GLENROY 14.14-98 def. OAK PARK 11.12-78
After handing Glenroy’s its first only loss earlier in the season, Oak Park were always going to come out with an extra bit of confidence.
Yet, like most good teams do, Glenroy shut that down very quickly and after kicking the first four goals of the game, Oak Park didn’t seem to have an answer.
But after fighting their way back in the second to win the quarter and reduce the deficit, the game looked to be a good one with Oak Park showing a bit of fight.
But yet again, Glenroy’s main goal kickers in Judd Brewster, Jayden Walker and Luke Capuano were too good inside the arcs, making Oak Park’s defence work when it really mattered.
Glenroy broke away again in the third and it proved to be costly despite a late surge from the Kangaroos.
Now sitting two wins off fourth spot, this game may prove to be a costly one for Oak Park.
WESTMEADOWS 5.11-41 def. by TULLAMARINE 11.11-77
Tullamarine continued their impressive season with what seemed to be a comfortable win against Westmeadows at Willowbrook Reserve.
The home side were poor in front of goal in the first quarter, kicking 0.5… which could have had them ahead with a very comfortable lead.
Instead, the Tigers allowed Tullamarine to stay in the game and actually out-score them.
The Demons then turned up the heat, kicking well ahead of Westmeadows and showing why they are sitting second on the Essendon Ford Division 1 ladder.
An avenue to goal seemed to be Westmeadows’ main problem with only two goal scorers, including Mitch Church kicking four, so it was an easy day for the Tullamarine defence.
Tullamarine looked strong again and it is certain that they are still in the hunt for that top spot as they take on Glenroy in two weeks.
