Round One might be in the books, but scouting ahead at each club's season outlook doesn't stop. We chat to Sunbury Lions coach Matt Tremellen who provides some insights on what their 2024 campaign will look like.
Coach: Matt Tremellen
PRE-SEASON FOCUS
"Everyone is looking at fitness but we've been pretty focused on working on our culture and our commitment to the cause. The girls are pretty excited and committed to going into the season with a strong mindset and everyone on the same page – something we've probably lacked in the past."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
"We've managed to retain most of our list which has been great to build on. We've brought in, and back, some exciting players with Bianca Pepper one who's come back to the club, Brianna Spratling has come down from Casterton, and Amy Clendenning has come to us after not playing footy for a couple of years.
"Adding those three to the group has added a bit of hype to our forwards and given us a good look towards our scoring end."
2024 OUTLOOK
"We just want to continue to build our culture – we want to have fun on and off the field and retain our players through the season and for the seasons after.
"We're committed to building around the youth of our club and providing a positive space and environment that our junior girls want to come through and continue to play at our club.
"We're setting the tone at the top with our seniors, and we're hoping that gives our junior girls a place to look up to and something to strive towards."
RAPID FIRE WITH MATT TREMELLEN
Shot after the siren to win, who do you want kicking it?
That's a tough one, any of our forwards will get the job done.
Biggest pest at the club?
Olivia Cornish – they call her 'Baddie'. She's a machine on and off the field.
Who might be viewed as the coach's pet?
All of them and none of them!
Who's the pre-game DJ? Are they any good?
Olivia Cornish has been bringing the tunes. As for if they're any good, I'm not around when it's happening – on purpose!
Which side are you looking forward to playing the most and why?
We're exciting to play our neighbours – the healthy rivalry is great and the girls love it.
EDFL MEDIA SAYS
Sunbury Lions will move into Division Two after spending the 2023 season in Division One where their only two wins came against sides that were soon relegated (Pascoe Vale and Sunbury Kangaroos). There won't be a great deal of personnel changes that will affect the Lions in season 2024 so they should be well poised to taste some on-field success.
