Senior Women - Big Margins Dominate Round Five

By JULIA MONTESANO

Caroline Springs 10.15-75 def. Roxburgh Park 1.0-6

IT was a sentimental Friday night for Caroline Springs, as they donned a special pink jumper that paid tribute to breast cancer awareness. This definitely spurred the girls on, as they ran rampage over Roxburgh Park, who now sit at the bottom of the ladder after the heavy loss. Anthea Stathakis had another stellar game for the Lakers, accounting for five of her team’s 10 goals. Carissa Whiley also contributed with a goal and had a fantastic game for Caroline Springs. But the shining star was Cassie Wilson, who was awarded best-on-ground for her continual endeavour to win the footy all night. The Lakers got over the line by 69 points and now move up to fourth on the ladder. After another dominant performance, Caroline Springs will surely have finals in their sights, pushing some of the best teams in the competition with their healthy percentage of 205.21.

VU Western Spurs 3.1-19 def. by Sunbury 10.10-70

Sunbury just keep on keeping on in the EDFL & WRFL Senior Women’s Competition, after they recorded another win to keep their strong season alive. This time, the Lions travelled to Henry Turner Reserve and dominated the play from the start. After kicking five goals alone in the first quarter, the signs already looked worrying for the VU Western Spurs, who didn’t score a major until the second half. Despite this, credit should be directed toward Tylah Evans, who kicked two of the Spurs’ three goals. There was an array of Sunbury stars who contributed to their impressive 51-point win. Kelsie Gill booted four majors for the day, and Brodie-Paige Theodore played a wonderful game for her side. For the Lions, it isn’t just the same players who do the heavy lifting each game. Each week, the best players change, showing the versatility and cohesion of the experienced Sunbury side.

Glenroy 1.2-8 def. by Keilor 15.10-100

Coming off the bye, Keilor ran onto Sewell Reserve with fresh legs and a fresh mentality to keep their winning streak alive. The Blues booted three goals to kick off the game, and followed it with four goals in each of the next three quarters. Keilor’s Brooke Todero had another great day in the forward line, adding five goals to her name. The Wright sisters also had a massive impact on Keilor’s fifth-straight win. Gemma Wright kicked four goals for the day and was awarded best-on-ground. Sarah Wright also contributed with a goal, and was the runner-up to her sister’s impressive best-on-ground performance. Jess Atta was also among the goal scorers for the Blues, contributing four goals to her team’s bag of 15. Although Rainbow Ebert kicked off her Glenroy season in style, this time it was sister, Freedom, who took the chocolates for best-on-ground in the Roys’ 92-point loss.

Craigieburn 7.9-51 def. Pascoe Vale 6.5-41

It was a fiery battle between these sides in Round 1 and the Round 5 match was much the same. Pascoe Vale gave Craigieburn a scare in the first quarter, booting four goals to one and looking to fight for redemption after their loss at the start of the season. But the Eagles dished up what Pascoe Vale had served, kicking four unanswered goals in the final quarter to clinch a 10-point victory and their fourth win for the season. Craigieburn produced one of the most remarkable comebacks of the season, after being down all day at Highgate Reserve. The small but fiery Dinks Cachia secured two goals for the Eagles, as did Emma Dowsett, who had another magnificent performance for her side. Thanks to the breathtaking leadership of Samantha French, the Eagles now move up to third on the ladder after their courageous win over a rejuvenated Panthers outfit.

Glen Orden 0.0.0 def. by Manor Lakes 27.18.180

Manor Lakes have cemented themselves as the one of the best teams in the WRFL component of the competition thanks to a prolific display against Glen Orden. The Storm played relentless footy, preventing the Hawks from scoring all day. Kellee McIntosh was blistering, as she had the best performance for a forward this season. She booted a whopping ten goals for the day and proved that she is one of the most dangerous forwards in the competition. McIntosh was assisted by five majors from Lindsay Newton and Yana Frontczak continued to build on her strong start to the season by kicking four goals in the triumphant win at Heathdale Oval. The mammoth 180-point win is the second win for the Storm that has been over 100 points, solidifying them as one of the teams who could really push for finals.
