Round 7 Preview - EDFL Women's

By JULIA MONTESANO

STRATHMORE v SUNBURY LIONS

Saturday 5pm @ Boeing Reserve

STRATHMORE got a much-needed win over Craigieburn in Round 6 with a 37-point victory at home.

This was largely thanks to bringing in former Oak Park/St Francis junior, Amy Hakim.

Hakim booted two of the Mores’ six goals and was named in the bests.

She will be a key player in the Mores’ line-up against the Sunbury Lions, who are on a high after claiming their biggest win of the year.

The Lions scored 104 points against the Magpies, keeping them to just one point.

The Lions had four multiple goal-kickers with Sera Catania, Olivia Cairo and Jessica Sutton each kicking two majors.

Dianne Comport led the way with four goals and was complemented by some stars of last year’s competition in Simone Craige and Kelsie Gill.

We could see an exciting battle in the midfield, as Strathmore star, Rebecca Said could go head-to-head with the likes of Craige in what could be a closer game than expected.

KEILOR v ROXBURGH PARK

Sunday 11:15am @ Green Gully Reserve

Roxburgh Park’s difficult season continued in Round 6 with an 103-point defeat against the Sunbury Lions.

The Magpies face another big challenge this round, facing the reigning premiers at Green Gully Reserve.

Keilor is fresh off a bye and has the fresh legs coming into the Round 7 clash.

The Blues’ last match was a narrow two-point win over Craigieburn, so they would be keen to make amends with a big win on a super Sunday of EDFL Women’s football.

Captain Christie Roberts has been solid in the ruck for Keilor, while Sophie Freeman and Maddison Steel have been stars in the forward line.

Roxburgh Park will be looking to the Devine sisters, Bianca and Tricia, as they have been shining lights for the Magpies all season.

AVONDALE HEIGHTS/TAYLORS LAKES v HILLSIDE

Sunday 12:45pm @ Canning Reserve

Avondale Heights/Taylors Lakes came off a tough loss against Westmeadows, who are in fine form.

While the side lost by 73 points, Rita Ceravolo and Brianna Rachkidi were the shining lights once again, continuing their stellar seasons.

The team should also be proud of sticking out the game, as the side only had 13 players out on the field.

Hillside also suffered a heavy loss, going down by 84 points to new EDFL Women’s team, Sunbury Kangaroos.

Brittany McIntyre starred once again for the Sharks and was complemented by Nikita Wright.

This could be the closest clash of the round, as it is a 10 v 11 battle.

Both teams are desperate for a win, with Hillside last getting a win in Round 4 and Avondale Heights/Taylors Lakes not experiencing victory since Round 1.

ABERFELDIE v WESTMEADOWS

Sunday 2:05pm @ Aberfeldie Park West

This is a battle between two in-form teams.

Before last week, Aberfeldie had won four straight games, including a 134-point thumping against Roxburgh Park.

But Abers experienced a wake-up call in Round 6 when they lost by 76 points against the undefeated Panthers and would be keen to put it all behind them to secure their fifth victory of the season.

They’ll have to watch out for Westmeadows forward, Danielle Linton though, as she has been in fine form inside 50.

Linton kicked three goals in the Tigers’ win against Avondale Heights/Taylors Lakes and has been amongst the goal-kickers each week for Westmeadows.

She was complemented by Emily Brebner, who also booted three majors for the day.

Aberfeldie will be relying on key ball-users, Olivia Madden and captain, Kurtis Shine, who will look to combat Westmeadows’ fire-power up forward.

CRAIGIEBURN v KEILOR PARK

Sunday 2:20pm @ DS Aitken Reserve

Craigieburn’s season hasn’t gone to plan as of yet, as it hasn’t won a game from four appearances.

The Eagles have some great ball-users such as captain, Natasha Konstantinidis, but are struggling in the forward line.

However, their dual-sport talent is standing up, with three cricketers in Samantha French, Taylah Logie and Rebecca Lines all named in the bests last week.

Things aren’t much better for the Devils - who suffered their biggest loss of the season against ladder-leaders, Burnside Heights.

Keilor Park went down by 158 points but the coaches were impressed by Chiara Imela, Jordan Gwynne and Karen Gwynne’s performances.

Keilor Park will be eager to bounce back from the heavy loss and get off the bottom of the ladder with a win away from home.

BURNSIDE HEIGHTS v PASCOE VALE

Sunday 2:35pm @ Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve

This is the clash we’ve all been waiting for, as first and second on the EDFL Women’s ladder go head-to-head.

At this stage, the Heights have slightly more momentum, coming off a huge 158-point thrashing against the Devils.

One player in particular shot her way up to second on the goal-kicking tally.

Bears forward, Kayla Ravanello booted a whopping 11 goals, outdoing star forward, Brooke McKinley, who kicked seven majors on the day.

McKinley still leads the way on the goal-kicking tally though, taking her total to 25 goals from just five matches.

The Panthers need to throw everything at the high-flying Heights, but have some fire-power of their own up forward.

Siobhan Carlton sits just behind McKinley and Ravanello on the goal-kicking tally, after adding three majors to her name against Aberfeldie in Round 6.

Experienced footballer, Aimee Whelan played her best game of the season, making an impact all over the ground.

This will be a battle of the star forwards and is likely to be an exciting, high-scoring shoot-out.
