Round 18 Preview - Essendon Ford Division 1

By TARA MURRAY (Star Weekly)

AIRPORT WEST v TULLAMARINE

ON paper this is set down to be a cracker of a game, but how it plays out is anyone’s guess.

With both sides already knowing that they will face each other in the first week of finals, the only thing on the line is whether they want to finish on top or not.

Demons coach Dave Connell said earlier in the week they would play it safe in the final round and not take any risks.

They did that against Taylors Lakes in their most recent game, icing up players at quarter time.

Despite not having a bench after quarter time, the Demons were able to have a big win and end Taylors Lakes’ finals hopes.

Connell said the first three quarters were some of the best football they had played. Youngster Tim Matson stood up, along with Will Becker.

The Eagles will also enter the match in good form, with their forward line again having a day out.

Alex Penaluna kicked another bag, as 10 players hit the scoreboard.

Kris Briggs, who kicked four goals, was named their best.

After kicking more than 170 points in each of the last two games, the Eagles would have defenders worried.

TAYLORS LAKES v CRAIGIEBURN

In what could have been an early elimination final if results had have fallen the right way, it still looks like and interesting final round match.

For the Lions, they needed to defeat Tullamarine to keep their finals hopes alive.

While they could finish on the same amount of points as Craigieburn, their percentage will be an issue and they won't be able to overtake them.

The Lions were no match for the undermanned Demons, only winning the last quarter as the Demons ran out of legs.

Matthew Dalla Libera and Christopher Vulic were named the best.

The Eagles didn’t even have to kick a ball on the weekend to seal their spot, having had the bye.

They’ll want to finish the regular season on a high and get some good form heading into finals.

EAST KEILOR v WESTMEADOWS

With not much on the line for either of these sides, it’s about finishing the season on a high.

Overall, both teams would be disappointed with their seasons and ladder positions.

East Keilor would be disappointed after not coming away with the points against Oak Park in a very winnable match.

The third quarter proved to be the difference, with five goals to two giving the Kangaroos enough breathing space.

James Philpot kicked six goals for the Cougars, while Nathan Kennedy was named their best.

Westmeadows proved no match for an Airport West side that has hit its straps at the right time of the year.

Dean Clare was the standout up forward for the Tigers kicking six goals.

Leigh Owen was named best for the Tigers for a second straight week.

JACANA v OAK PARK

This is the last opportunity for the Jaguars to get a win.

After a tough season in the higher grade, the Jaguars will be looking to finish on a high and send coach Robert Fletcher off on a good note.

The Jaguars were left to rue a poor first half against Hillside on Saturday.

The Sharks led by 40 points at half time, but only outscored the Jaguars by 13 points in the second half.

For the Kangaroos it’s another chance to get a win on the board and maybe move up a ladder position.

It’s a match the Kangaroos are expected to win and would give them two wins in a row to finish the season.

They were able to do enough to account for East Keilor by nine points.

Aden Harris was the key up forward for the Kangaroos, kicking six goals in a best-on-ground performance.
