Keilor, Craigieburn & Sunbury All Undefeated After Round 2

Senior Women's Wrap - Round 2

By JULIA MONTESANO

Roxburgh Park 1.3-9 def. by Glenroy 11.19-85

WITH Glenroy being one of the newest teams in the EDFL & WRFL Senior Women’s Competition, this game was probably Roxburgh Park’s best chance for a win. However, the Roys flexed their muscles and won the game convincingly, thanks to the spirit shown by the girls away from home. Glenroy kicked 11 goals for the day to record a well-deserved victory, after leading for most of the game last week and succumbing to a narrow loss. Renae Schwarze again proved herself as one of the competition’s best leaders, helping her side mount the pressure on a struggling Magpies outfit.

Pascoe Vale 1.0-6 def. by Keilor 19.19-133

It was the battle between two of the most popular clubs in the EDFL at Raeburn Reserve, but being away from home didn’t faze Keilor, as they dominated play all day. They piled on the goals throughout the whole game, with the Panthers only getting on the board in the last quarter. The same culprits who led the way for the Blues, with Brooke Todero kicking a whopping seven goals and Tanay Barbuto booting six. Sophie Fazzolari also had another solid game in the red, white and blue, helping her team record a massive 127-point win.

Sunbury 8.14-62 def. Glen Orden 1.0-6

Sunbury’s first home game saw them claim a massive 56-point victory to keep their unbeaten record alive. They stopped the momentum of Glen Orden right from the get-go, after the Hawks kick-started their season with a big Round 1 victory against Tarneit. Simone Craige starred again for the Lions, claiming her stake as one of the best on-ballers in the competition. She also contributed two goals, along with Brittney Knight and Jaimee-Lee Wilson, who also booted two majors for the day. Sunbury will definitely be a team to watch in the competition.

Tarneit 1.0-6 def. by Craigieburn 9.21-75

Tarneit’s first home match of the year didn’t exactly go to plan, as the surprise package of the competition, Craigieburn, scored another massive victory. This time, the margin blew out to 71 points, but it could well have been more as the Eagles scored 21 behinds for the day to go with their nine goals. Emma Dowsett and Rachael Martin kicked two goals each and were among the best-on-ground. Together, they helped to prove that Craigieburn are a force to be reckoned with after scoring two promising wins to kick-start their season.

VU Western Spurs 4.5-29 def. Caroline Springs 2.3-15

Brian Lake was a special guest in Caroline Springs’ first match of the year, standing behind the goals at Henry Turner Oval. The Lakers were competitive all day, playing a great defensive game to challenge the VU Western Spurs. This was exemplified by a goalless second half by both teams. However, the Spurs braved out the tough contest, despite having smaller interchanges, and recorded their first victory in the competition. The win was aided by two goals from the Spurs’ Ashleigh Ashman and good efforts from team-mates Sarah Osborne and Natalie Thomas.
