EDFL Women’s Preview - Friday & Saturday Games

Round 11 Edition

HILLSIDE v SUNBURY KANGAROOS
Friday 7:30pm at Hillside Reserve

THIS match-up for the Sharks looms as a season-defining game against the in-form Sunbury Kangaroos.

In Round 10 Rachael Burton and Emily Paterno proved unstoppable against a decimated Craigieburn, guiding the Sharks to 149-point win.

Burton kicked a career-best nine goals while Paterno was equally dangerous kicking seven.

Dearne Ellis, Rebecca Coleman and Rachael Jackson also scored multiple goals.

However, the Kangaroos sit confidently having moved into third position on the back of five wins from their last six games.

Alexandra Quigley came back into their line-up for her third game of the season against Westmeadows and booted eight goals in another best-on performance.

Louise Martino and Bailee Said were skilful around the ground and helped the Kangaroos to get off to a flyer, before extending the lead from five goals at half time to 10 goals at full time.

It will be intriguing to see who both teams name as Hillside will need to be at the top of their game to knock the higher-ranked Sunbury Kangaroos off.

STRATHMORE v ABERFELDIE 1
Saturday 11:50am at Boeing Reserve

Strathmore will need to shake off their defeat to Pascoe Vale to put in a stronger performance against an undefeated Aberfeldie.

The Mores were unable to apply scoreboard pressure against the previously winless Panthers, only kicking a single goal for the game through Robyn Randell.

Meanwhile Amy Starzer and Kylie Kennedy (three goals) led Aberfeldie to its 10th straight win against the Sunbury Lions at Clifton Park last week.

Jess Atta and Siobhan Carlton kicked two apiece.

Round 1 was the last time the Mores and Gorillas faced off and it was an 88-point win for the latter.

It will be important for Strathmore that the score line in this match does not blow out, with the challenge not getting any easier going into Round 12 with Keilor up next.

WESTMEADOWS v CRAIGIEBURN
Saturday 4:50pm at Willowbrook Reserve

Westmeadows were unable to stop the firepower of the Sunbury Kangaroos at home in Round 10 and were limited to five of their own scoring opportunities.

Natalie Linton and Grace Gerada did manage to get on the board with a goal each.

The loss has the Tigers sitting in fifth position and a game outside the top four, having now lost to all teams above them.

The divide between the top half and bottom half of the Premier ladder was again made apparent by the Eagles’ three-figure loss to Hillside.

With Pascoe Vale’s first win for the season came in Round 10, so Craigieburn has now dropped to the bottom of the ladder.

Breanna Meadows followed up her good performance from Round 9, doing her best to keep her teammates’ spirits up as they battled away with only 15 players on the field.

There was a 147-point differential the last time they played, with Jacinta Scott and Kirzty Brady prominent, however Craigieburn will be determined to reduce the deficit and keep their heads up with a winnable game against Pascoe Vale on the horizon.

ABERFELDIE 2 v TULLAMARINE
Friday 7:30pm at Clifton Park

A five-goal best-on-ground performance by first-year player Chelsea Coran saw Aberfeldie claim a 44-7 win against the Jets last week.

Matilda Lethlean and Emily Newton were also industrious in the win.

Tullamarine was five points away from stealing a seemingly unlikely come-from-behind win against Essendon Doutta Stars in Round 10.

Trailing by 18 points at three-quarter time, Tullamarine doubled its score in the last quarter, but couldn’t deliver the final blow.

Kate Nicolaou (two goals), Tricia Devine and Erin Kelly were important in the fight back.

Aberfeldie requires a percentage-boosting win here to overcome Roxburgh Park and Maribyrnong Park and claim fifth position, but Tullamarine will not want to let this one slip.

ROXBURGH PARK v AVONDALE HEIGHTS
Saturday 10:00am at Lakeside Oval

Roxburgh Park continued its trend of finishing games off well, with a five-goal last quarter against Coburg Districts last week.

Catherine Benning was lively in her second game for the Magpies, with Fakapale Falesiu and Jessica Paten also getting first hands on the ball.

Shelby Best finished up her good work in the forward line with three goals.

Avondale Heights could only manage a single point against Keilor Park last week, going down 73-1.

Isara Capapas, who still eligible for underage football, played her best game of the season and was well supported by Lauren McNabb and Hajer Mohamed.

The Heights will be looking to Isabella Iaccino to be a threat around goal as they look to reverse the result of their last match-up.

KEILOR PARK v GREENVALE
Saturday 2:00pm at Keilor Park Reserve

A stand-out game by Meghan Patrick helped guide the Devils to an 81-point win over Greenvale last week.

A slow start after half time was the only blip on a strong team effort polished off by Samantha German, Meghan Patrick and Cheyene Macumber.

Aberfeldie 2 held Greenvale at bay in their Round 10 meeting.

Danielle Harding was the only player to get on the board.

Jessica Rigon, Emilie Fletcher and Meiteya Rocha were the best players for the Jets.

Greenvale will need Bianca Torrijos and Courtney McLaughlin to fire to take the game up to a strong Keilor Park midfield.
