Douttas Stuns Jets To Survive Relegation

ESSENDON Doutta Stars’ remarkable late season run to avoid relegation was completed in stunning fashion at an emotional Nipper Jordan Oval on Saturday.

With just .80 per cent separating the Stars from West Coburg going into the final round, there were many nervous Douttas fans frantically keeping the EDFL Live App handy as live scores came through from West Coburg’s game against Pascoe Vale.

The Stars started well and dominated with their forward pressure against an off Greenvale side, but inaccurate kicking kept Greenvale in it.

By three-quarter time the Stars held a handy 22-point lead, but the Jets started the final term on fire, with Jacob Thompson slamming through back-to-back goals that sent shivers through the spines of the Douttas locals.

But as Pascoe Vale slowly pulled away from the Burgers, so did Douttas, steadying to kick five of the game’s final seven goals to record a 28-point win, rendering percentage irrelevant in the relegation battle.

Greenvale’s loss proved quite costly as well, as they now have to front up for a knock-out final on Sunday against Strathmore as the away team at Windy Hill.

A win would have ensured a Qualifying Final berth on Saturday against Keilor, who will instead face Aberfeldie for a spot in the grand final this weekend.

Eagles Advance In Both Division 1 Finals

AIRPORT West will again take centre stage at Windy Hill in the Essendon Ford Division 1 Grand Final on September 8 after easily accounting for Tullamarine at Greenvale on Saturday.

Alex Penaluna starred with five goals while Brendan Godden provided his usual spark with two as the Eagles slowly took control of the Qualifying Final after half time.

Airport West kicked the only two goals of the third term before storming home in the last, blowing the Demons out of the water to score an impressive 56-point win and earn home-team status for the grand final.

Tullamarine will now have to front up at Coburg City Oval this Sunday for a Preliminary Final date with Craigieburn, after the Eagles held on to beat Hillside in a Windy Hill thriller on Sunday.

In front of a vocal and passionate crowd, Craigieburn made use of the scoring end (primary school end) in the first quarter before the Sharks got going in the second, bringing the game within a point by the main break after dominating forward entries throughout the first half.

By three-quarter time the Eagles seemed to have a match-winning lead at 34 points... but the Sharks fought back in style.

Quick goals to Anthony Aloi and Victor Micallef breathed life back into Hillside but a quick steadier the other way to Caelan Anderson was crucial against the flow.

Hillside then kicked the next four goals within 12 minutes, setting up a grandstand finish.

Up by two points, Craigieburn’s back line, led brilliantly by Ben Fynch, continually repelled each Hillside attack and with the help of four crucial goals from spearhead Dean Limbach, Craigieburn held on to advance to Sunday’s prelim against Tullamarine.

Magpies Earn Top Two Finish In Style

THE telling game of Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 over the weekend was at Ormond Park between Moonee Valley and Roxburgh Park.

With a top two spot on the line, it was a healthier Roxburgh Park outfit that managed to get the job done and it did so in convincing fashion.

Kicking into the breeze toward the city end, the Magpies stormed out of the blocks in the opening term, kicking eight goals to three to immediately put doubt into Moonee Valley’s psyche.

The Fog’s causes weren’t helped in the second as ruckman Luke Egan limped off the field before returning star Braden Padmore had to leave the game with an apparent ankle complaint.

Roxburgh Park took full advantage, with Ferras Merhi dominating in the ruck and Luke Capuano doing as he pleased up forward, finishing with seven majors in what turned out to be a comfortable 61-point win.

It sets up a big ‘Super Saturday’ of Semi Final footy, with Roxburgh Park to take on the Northern Saints in the Qualifying Final at Coburg City Oval while East Sunbury will make its EDFL Finals debut at Keilor against the Fog.
