KEILOR junior Daniel Venables became the EDFL’s latest first round draft pick since 2014 after being picked up by the West Coast Eagles on Friday.
Venables, who’s name dropped at Pick 13, was a standout midfielder for Vic Metro and despite only playing three games for the Western Jets in 2016, showed enough at the carnival to impress the Eagles – a club that doesn’t mind Western Jets talent after selecting Liam Duggan in 2014.
Later that night, Maribyrnong Park’s Luke Ryan finally got his chance at AFL level and is also headed across the Nullarbor – with the Dockers taking the former Calder Cannon at Pick 66.
Ryan had a stellar season with Coburg that ended with him claiming the Fothergill-Round Medal as the VFL’s best player under 23.
Finally, in Monday’s Rookie Draft, a second Coburg player with EDFL credentials landed on an AFL list, with Robbie Fox being taken by the Sydney Swans at Pick 33.
Fox was a senior player with Aberfeldie before securing a regular spot with Coburg – culminating in a 2016 VFL Team of the Year gong and now, a shot on the Swans’ rookie list.
