Three EDFL Juniors Selected in AFLW Draft

2023 AFLW Draft Wrap

Three EDFL athletes in Kiera Whiley, Kayley Kavanagh, and Sarah Grunden have found new homes on AFLW lists following Monday night's AFLW Draft.

They will join Amy Gaylor who was selected by Essendon in the expansion pre-signing window in November.

Whiley was selected by St Kilda with pick 10 and will join EDFL juniors Georgia Patrikios and Nicola Stevens.

She spent the 2023 season with Hillside and was also seen during the inaugural seasons of the EDFL and WRFL combined female competition.

Draft boffins Rookie Me Central describe her as an inside midfielder with a strong grasp on the fundamentals.

"She gets to the right spots, wins the ball and makes good decisions with ball-in-hand. Often a lot of her possessions are within a metre of the coalface, and she is one who at a ball-up will have the option of burrowing down, but also ducking out the back and clearing the ball forward.

"A reliable ball user on both sides of her body, Whiley is not afraid to put her body on the line. She will do all the team things, and also lay the big tackles when required. Her consistency with both her attack on the contest, and her overall production can hardly be doubted, with no less than 14 disposals in any Talent League game."

Kavanagh was the next to be picked up when West Coast's pick 14 rolled around seeing her join Daisy Pearce and Pascoe Vale alumni Krstel Petrevski.

She started her football journey in 2017 with Strathmore and went on to play 64 games for the Mores, including a senior debut in their 2022 premiership season.

Rookie Me Central describe her as one of the AFLW draft bolters this season after minimising her deficiencies and improving on her strengths.

"The 169cm midfielder started the year with a 28-disposal game against Sandringham Dragons, and it was an inkling of what Kavanagh was set to produce, as she recorded 20-plus disposals in all of her nine games.

"Her form rarely wavered and it saw Kavanagh win All-Australian honours and her state's MVP honour to cap off a truly remarkable carnival. Returning to the Talent League, she racked up a season-high 35 disposals and took six marks against the Falcons, and maintained her high level of consistency.

"Along with her consistency and clean hands on the inside, Kavanagh has always been a strong defensive player, laying plenty of tackles. She averaged 4.9 per game in 2022, but that number jumped up to 8.3 for 2023, with her disposals (15.2 to 25.3) and marks (2.9 to 4.0) also making considerable rises from year to year."

Just two picks later, Grunden was the next to be picked up when Sydney used pick 16 to reunite the Keilor junior with old friend Montana Ham.

She played 108 games for Keilor starting as just an eight-year-old, while also spending a season with Essendon Doutta Stars.

Rookie Me Central describe her as a medium forward with natural footballing ability.

"Across the course of the first three weeks, Grunden averaged 18 disposals, 2.3 marks 3.7 tackles, 4.0 inside 50s and booted 4.3. Those trio of games ended up being three of her highest production games for the season, and gave a glimpse into what she was capable of. As a midfielder at local level who became a forward at the Cannons, Grunden fitted well inside 50.

"Even when she was not kicking goals, she was setting up her teammates and showing great forward craft to assist her side to best get the win. Her kicking and vision in the front half particularly stood out and added a point of difference compared to individual heavy volume scorers."

Amy Gaylor meanwhile, started playing football in 2019 and played 41 games with Strathmore.

Rookie Me Central describe her as an all-round star athlete and incredible inside midfielder.

"Gaylor's mix of athletic and footballing profile makes her a damaging player. From an athleticism point of view, there's little that she does not excel in. Boasting the biggest vertical jump in the country (62cm standing and 74cm running), the 171cm midfielder also clocked a 3.2-second 20m sprint, and a sub-eight minute 2km time trial.

"Essentially, Gaylor can run all day, and still have her burst speeds through contests all over the ground. Her inside work in particular is what stands out, with some of the cleanest hands, best vision and natural contested game that shines, Gaylor is a prospect with potential to only get better in the future."
