SUNBURY continued on their merry way in the EDFL & WRFL Senior Women’s Competition after recording their fourth consecutive win. Simone Craige again led the way for the Lions and was awarded best-on-ground for her efforts at Clarke Oval. Kelsie Gill also chipped in with two goals for Sunbury and Natalie East was once again among the best with her hard work around the contest. Caroline Springs had an accurate day away from home, not kicking a behind all day. This was thanks to two goals from Sophie Cachia, who managed to keep her side in the game against a dominant Sunbury outfit. Alisha Jamieson was the shining star for the Lakers and was rewarded for her tireless efforts throughout the day. However, her efforts couldn’t do enough to slow down the Lions’ momentum, as they ran out 29-point winners, keeping their unbeaten streak alive.
Roxburgh Park 7.1.43 def. by Craigieburn 8.4.52
The local derby was a highly-anticipated contest throughout the week and on Sunday, it certainly delivered. Craigieburn got off to a flyer and booted three unanswered goals in the first quarter. But Roxburgh Park fought back with four second-quarter goals to snatch the half time lead. The contest continued to seesaw throughout the second half, with the ball soaring from end to end. However, Emma Dowsett’s three goals and Samantha French’s diligent efforts all day got Craigieburn over the line. Despite the loss, Roxburgh Park’s Tricia Devine was the star of the day, accounting for five of her team’s seven goals. The 2016 Roxburgh Park best-and-fairest winner had an absolute blinder at Lakeside Oval, and nearly single-handedly beat the Eagles on her own. But Craigieburn held strong and continued to build on their strong start to the season, taking home a thrilling nine-point win away from home.
Pascoe Vale 9.15.69 def. Glen Orden 3.0.18
Pascoe Vale secured their second win of the season at Raeburn Reserve, in what was an impressive display of footy against Glen Orden. The Panthers were magnificent all day, and never took their foot off the pedal, continuing to fight back after a sluggish start to the season. Rita Locco was best-on-ground for Pascoe Vale, while Jane Greenshields also had another impressive game for the Panthers. Cara Matsa exhibited her leadership in the match as well to help her team kick-start their campaign. Despite an accurate display of three goals and no behinds, Glen Orden suffered a 51-point loss, putting their finals hopes in doubt. On the other side of the spectrum, Pascoe Vale’s season has been rejuvenated and they will no doubt be looking to keep their winning streak alive to really take it up to the competition’s finest.
Manor Lakes 12.14.86 def. Glenroy 1.1.7
Manor Lakes put on an absolute clinic at Howqua Reserve, putting their hand up as one of the teams to look out for in the competition. Yana Frontczak contributed three goals to the Storm’s tally, while Kellee McIntosh continued her great form by kicking another two goals at Howqua Reserve. Jessica Dousling was wonderful for Manor Lakes and impressed with her unrelenting determination all over the ground. The Storm didn’t ease up all day, piling the pressure on Glenroy to prove that they were one of the competition’s spearheads. It was a tough day for the Roys, only scoring one goal and slumping further down the ladder. Emily Angelidis was Glenroy’s only goal-scorer and despite impressive games from Melissa Tomkinson and Rainbow Ebert, they couldn’t avoid Manor Lakes’ third-quarter rampage, as they came out and kicked seven goals to secure a convincing win at home.
Tarneit 1.0.6 def. by VU Western Spurs 13.10.88
After a heavy Round 1 defeat against Manor Lakes, the VU Western Spurs have been showing promise ever since, bouncing back from an unideal start to the season with some much-needed wins. This week, they took the chocolates against Tarneit, who are still yet to record their first win in the competition. The Spurs were dominant all day and won some respect back from the rest of the competition. Ashleigh Smith was the only goal-scorer for Tarneit and consequently, was awarded the best player on the ground for the Titans. Despite their winless start to the season, Smith has shown promising signs for the young side, thanks to her consistent displays of resilience. But on the day, her Titans couldn’t match the dominance of the VU Western Spurs, who claimed an impressive 82-point win to get their season well and truly back on track.
