Sunbury, Keilor & Craigieburn On The Round 9 Winners List

By JULIA MONTESANO

CRAIGIEBURN 15.9-99 def. GLEN ORDEN 0.0-0

Game Details

AFTER a wonderful start to the season, Craigieburn’s last three weeks have been disappointing.

The Eagles didn’t kick a goal for two of those weeks, and last week’s heavy defeat against Glenroy was a big wake-up call for them.

They sure fought back in style, applying pressure on Glen Orden for the whole day.

The Hawks couldn’t even register a score, thanks to Craigieburn’s scintillating pressure all over the ground.

Once again, it was Samantha French and Emma Dowsett who led from the front, kicking five goals between them.

There were plenty of goal-scorers for the Eagles at DS Aitken Reserve, showing the depth of their side.

Most of these goals were kicked in the last quarter, as a six-goal quarter acted as a percentage-booster for Craigieburn.

The 99-point win boosts their ladder position as they now sit fifth - just one spot away from a finals berth.

SUNBURY 16.11-107 def. PASCOE VALE 1.2-8

Game Details

It was another big win for Sunbury, who continued their great form in the inaugural EDFL & WRFL Senior Women’s Competition.

It was an even bigger day for Brooke Surgeon, who booted a massive six goals for the Lions.

Pascoe Vale were kept goalless up until half time, as Sunbury took a convincing 44-point lead at the main break.

The signs were already troubling for the Panthers, but the Lions continued to pile on the pressure with a whopping seven-goal third quarter.

Even though the Panthers registered a major in the third quarter, the game was well out of their hands before that.

But for Sunbury, their style of football seems to get more impressive each week, claiming another big win at Clarke Oval.

The 99-point win takes their undefeated streak to eight, and with that, they claim top spot on the ladder.

VU WESTERN SPURS 2.0-12 def. by KEILOR 21.16-142

Game Details

Going into the match, the VU Western Spurs knew it was going to be a tough day at the office.

A first-quarter goal provided some spark for the Spurs, but it was Keilor who kicked away once again.

At half time, the margin sat at 54 points and it looked like the Blues were set to record another 100-point win.

Tanay Barbuto and Brooke Todero were again the stars in Keilor’s forward line, as they each kicked five goals for the day.

After Sarah Wright came out on top last week, sister, Gemma fought back this week.

The Wrights had seven goals between them, with three coming from Sarah and four coming from Gemma.

But the game belonged to Taylor Jones, who produced a best-on-ground performance for the Blues.

Despite goals from Jacinta Ganino and Brooke Muscat, the VU Western Spurs couldn’t match Keilor’s dominance, succumbing to a 130-point loss.

TARNEIT 0.0-0 def. by MANOR LAKES 28.13-181

Game Details

Like Keilor, Manor Lakes continue to produce massive winning margins.

This time, Tarneit was the victim of another clinical performance by the Storm.

A six-goal first quarter sunk Tarneit’s hopes immediately, as Manor Lakes was on a mission to consolidate its finals spot.

The Storm kicked a whopping 10 goals in the third quarter to take the margin out to 132 points - a dreary sight for Tarneit fans.

It was a team effort in the third quarter, but much of it was thanks to a 10-goal performance from one player alone.

This time it wasn’t Kellee McIntosh, as Yana Frontczak had an absolute day out in the forward line.

McIntosh still contributed five goals, while Lindsay Newton added another four to Manor Lakes’ 28-goal performance.

An eight-goal last quarter took the final margin out to 181 points, as the Storm recorded one of the biggest wins of the season.

CAROLINE SPRINGS 6.7-43 def. GLENROY 2.1-13

Game Details

With skipper, Renae Schwarze watching from the sidelines, Glenroy was in for a tough day.

But the Roys managed to hold Caroline Springs to just two goals in the first quarter, leaving them with a sniff going into the second.

The half time margin was 21 points, but the Roys still believed that they could snatch a win at Town Centre Oval.

In the third quarter, their defence held strong, as they kept the Lakers scoreless, and managed to add a goal to the scoreboard themselves.

But Caroline Springs sunk Glenroy’s hopes of recording back-to-back wins, as they kicked two goals in the last quarter to record a 30-point win.

Caroline Springs’ Caitlin Pretty contributed two goals to the win while Krystyn Raymundo had one of her best games for the Lakers.

With the win, Caroline Springs hold onto fourth place on the ladder at the end of Round 9.
