STRATHMORE 11.13-79 def. GREENVALE 9.6-60
A HUGE game in the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division competition which saw Strathmore knock off top-of-the-table, Greenvale – the Jets’ second loss of the season.
It was a very impressive day for the home side.
As expected, the game was going to be tight, but Strathmore definitely went into this game as underdogs.
Greenvale came out strong from the first bounce and Strathmore were poor in front of goal, which saw the Jets go into the quarter break up by a point.
But the experience of the Mores’ backline seemed too strong, with Michael Firrito, Luke Jarrad and Xavier Allison all starring in the bests and keeping Greenvale accountable for four quarters.
Even with another strong performance from Addam Maric, who kicked two goals and yet again featured in the bests, Strathmore still came out victors.
Strathmore’s ladder position doesn’t really reflect how their season is tracking so far, having now beaten every team above them in the top four.
ABERFELDIE 14.15-99 def. KEILOR 4.8-32
A game that didn’t really go as many would have expected.
Aberfeldie fired on Saturday down at Clifton Park against what seemed to be a vulnerable Keilor side.
Kicking only one goal by the main break and four goals for the game, Keilor didn’t seem to be playing like they have been in recent weeks.
Josh Cubillo and Josh Toy led the way for the Gorillas, lighting up the ground with their impressive movement of the pill, as well as moving forward and converting.
The win to Aberfeldie and Greenvale’s puts the two head-to-head at the top of the table, which makes the fight for top spot a whole lot more interesting.
ESSENDON DOUTTA STARS 9.9-63 def. by Avondale Heights 12.8-80
Avondale Heights made it four from four after defeating Essendon Doutta Stars at Nipper Jordan Oval.
The Heights haven’t even looked like losing since Donald McDonald replaced Rick Horwood as coach, moving themselves to sixth on the ladder and two games behind Keilor.
They can still continue to improve their position in the back end of the season.
Yet again, Patrick Rose and Matthew Williamson starred, kicking five goals between them and featuring in the best again, which is a positive sign for the side.
This also makes it Essendon Doutta Stars’ fourth loss in a row, moving them to eighth on the ladder behind Pascoe Vale.
Can the Heights continue their winning ways and knock off the in-form Aberfeldie this weekend?
WEST COBURG 10.11-71 def. by MARIBYRNONG PARK 12.13-85
A little bit too close for comfort for Maribyrnong Park, many would assume.
West Coburg have shown glimpses of how well they can play throughout the season, but coming within 14 points of the third-placed team definitely gave the visitors a scare.
Marwan Abdulwahed and Jack Yelland both played great games, which nearly led to the upset at Coburg City Oval.
But Maribyrnong Park still came away with the win, keeping them two games clear of Strathmore and in a good position within the top four.
Nathan McLellan and Jock Cornell were both impressive and helped lead their sides to the win.
CRAIGIEBURN 7.2-44 def. by PASCOE VALE 16.24-120
Pascoe Vale scored their second win in a row against Craigieburn – the Panthers’ fourth for the 2017 season.
Craigieburn didn’t go down easy at DS Aitken Reserve, leading Pascoe Vale into the first break by a point and only trailing by 10 points at half time.
The Eagles showed a lot of heart.
But it has been a very lacklustre season for Craigieburn.
They are yet to put a win on the board, so it will be interesting to see if they can grab one before season’s end.
Pascoe Vale haven’t had the season they would have hoped for, either, since their two big wins at the beginning of the season.
The Panthers just haven’t been able to beat the stronger sides within the competition.
Dean Soncin yet again performed well and earned a mention in the bests for the Panthers, which is a positive.
Brent Gordon played another good game for Craigieburn, trying to keep his side in the game.
