ROUND 17 PREVIEW | Strathmore Community Bank Division 2

By MICHAEL HABER

Moonee Valley v Roxburgh Park

MOONEE Valley managed to hold off Keilor Park last week, beating them by 14 points thanks to the high flying first quarter they had. Josh Covelli was kept goalless during the match but Stuart Taylor rose to the occasion, slotting three for his side. Last time Moonee Valley played the Magpies they managed to steal the victory in the final minutes of the game. Moonee Valley still have flaws and will definitely be looking to iron them out before the finals and going up against Roxburgh Park will be a great test for the Fog.

Roxburgh Park have looked a bit shaky lately, having lost to Moonee Valley three weeks ago. Their two wins since have been comeback victories, where they were down at three-quarter time. Their once feared status has taken a tumble at the worst time imaginable. They still hold top spot but the minor premiership is still going to be hard to achieve with East Keilor hot on their tails. The Magpies need a convincing win over Moonee Valley to assert their dominance again, otherwise they could be facing a fall from grace at a very bad time

East Sunbury v Keilor Park

This is the next instalment of the battle for fourth.

The Thunder were close to defeating top team, Roxburgh Park, but let a 14-point lead at three-quarter time go to lose by that same margin. East Sunbury have competed well with the top teams as of late but they have been unable to convert those excellent performances into wins. They often go down in the last quarter after beating or staying close to their opponents. This week will be different however as if they lose then their top four dream is over.

Keilor Park had to play catch up in their Round 16 game against Moonee Valley but fell short by 14 points. They were unable to deal with the wind and the extreme advantage it gave Moonee Valley in the first quarter and couldn’t capitalise on the wind after the changes. Aside from that, the Devils played a great game and showed that they deserve finals football. They have improved immensely throughout the season and have only lost one of their past five games. A win against East Sunbury this weekend will almost guarantee their spot in the finals.

Jacana v Coburg Districts

This is do-or-die.

The Jaguars played out another fantastic match with the Cougars last week but fell short by nine points after leading at three-quarter time. There were a few positives however, the main one being Rhys Brown’s return. He managed to score three goals after being out for over a month. It has been a tough four weeks for the Jaguars, they’ve won two and lost two, but they have all been close games. They still have the fire in them but it may be too late, being two games behind.

After losing five games straight and their spot in the finals, Coburg Districts beat Burnside Heights by 117 points. Saad Saad continued his sensational goalkicking form, booting seven for his side in what did start off as a tight game. Tommy Lucin was once again one of the best for his side and they will need him to be up there again this week. The Lions are only one game out from fourth spot and need to not only win this match but pray that Keilor Park falter in their final two games.

Burnside Heights v East Keilor

The Bears were again blown out of the water last week, going down by 117 points to the Lions. Despite winning the first quarter, Burnside Heights was simply not good enough to keep up with their opponents. Vincent Angelone and Jordan Agnoleto were once again the best for their team but it wasn’t enough. They take on East Keilor and Keilor Park in their final two games of the season, both of those sides being in the top four. A win may to be difficult to steal now, this late into the season.

East Keilor sit one game off the pace of first spot after coming from behind to beat Jacana by nine points. It was an amazing effort from the whole team to claw their way back into the contest and winning after looking vulnerable in the first half. This week’s match shouldn’t pose any threat to the Cougars as they chase down top spot.
