ROUND 15 PREVIEW | Strathmore Community Bank Division 2

By MICHAEL HABER

RADIO GAME | Roxburgh Park v East Keilor

ROXBURGH Park’s 10-game winning streak was ended last week when they were defeated by Moonee Valley by four points. Despite leading at halftime and three-quarter time, the Magpies were outdone by their opponents in the last. Luke Capuano continued his stellar form but it wasn’t enough. Harley Short’s ball movement was also at its finest but it couldn’t get his team over the line. The loss showed that Roxburgh Park can be beaten and that when put under immense physical pressure, they will buckle.

East Keilor are coming into the match following a win over Coburg Districts. They were down at halftime but managed to storm home in the final half, leaving the Lions wondering what had hit them. The Cougars now have the longest winning streak in the division with five. Roxburgh Park aside, they have been the strongest team of late. The last time these two teams faced off, it was a tough and gruelling affair, which the Magpies managed to win. Things are different now and East Keilor will be confident to get their revenge.

Keilor Park v Coburg Districts

Keilor Park have won three in a row and claimed fourth spot on the ladder. Last week they were able to easily fend off a team chasing fourth spot, East Sunbury, by 40 points. Nate Trotter was on fire yet again in his side’s victory which ultimately put them one game clear of fifth. This game is extra important because if the Devils manage to defeat Coburg Districts, they will have almost certainly cemented their stay in the top four.

Coburg Districts let a halftime lead slide against East Keilor and came out of Round 14 as 42-point losers. Saad Saad’s eight goals were not enough to help his team in a match that they needed to win desperately. Coburg Districts must be composed and calm going into this match if they want any chance of taking back fourth spot.

This game will be full of emotion as a Devils win could settle the top four, whereas a Lions win will keep the top four race alive.

Jacana v Moonee Valley

The Jaguars trampled all over their opponents in the Burnside Heights Bears last week, winning by 148 points. They managed to kick seven goals in each quarter, with Bryce Kimuliatis scoring nine for himself. It was a dominating performance across the field and Michael Evans once again received best-on-ground honours. Jacana is sitting in sixth with 20 points and needs to win this match to keep them in the running for fourth spot.

Moonee Valley came back from at 25-point deficit last week to defeat Roxburgh Park by four points. The win was huge for their morale, especially so close to the finals, as it signified a return to form for the previously struggling side. It marked their first win streak since being defeated by Roxburgh Park earlier in the season. Joshua Covelli was once again on fire, leading his side’s forward line with nine goals.

A win for either side gets them closer to their final goal – Moonee Valley could reclaim first spot and Jacana could get one game away from fourth. A win this weekend is important.

Burnside Heights v East Sunbury

The Bears were dealt their fifth straight loss by over 100 points last week when they went down to Jacana by 148. The match never went well for Burnside Heights as their defence was torn apart, ultimately letting 28 goals through. This year hasn’t been too great for the Bears and with the competition being so tight above them, they just have to focus on coming out and improving every time they play.

East Sunbury suffered a damaging loss last week when they went down to the Devils by 42 points. The loss was huge as it put them two games out of fourth spot. This means that they will have to play their hearts out to reach the finals. They will be favourites going into this weekend’s match and if they manage to win it, then it will put them hopefully closer to their goal of fourth.
