The Essendon District Football League is gearing up for the 2026 Pat Cronin Foundation Round this weekend.
Across nine football and netball leagues, 289 clubs, 3,263 teams, 77,500 players and over 300,000 supporters are united by one powerful purpose — to end the coward punch.
Every player will wear a yellow armband to symbolise a stand against all forms of violence, including the coward punch.
This round is a powerful moment to remember Pat Cronin, a young man whose life was tragically cut short by a coward punch while trying to protect a friend.
Pat’s story is a stark reminder of how a single act of violence can have devastating consequences.
Foundation director Matt Cronin said: “Violence has no place in our society let alone in sports.
“Changing attitudes starts with education and we’re proud to be giving clubs the tools and the leadership to take action,” he said.
“In addition to over 75,000 participants this year, our messages will also reach an estimated 300,000 supporters and spectators over the three days of competition.”
EDFL chief executive Andrew Johnston said it’s a privilege to again be taking part in such an important weekend to play our role in eradicating this senseless act in our community.
“It’s crucial that the EDFL community continues to receive education and be reminded about strategies for managing emotions.
“We can't wait to see the yellow armbands all throughout the competition to continue the conversation and education.”
