No Real Surprises In Round 7 Of Strathmore Community Bank Division 2

By LIAM McALLION

Burnside Heights 8.12-60 def. by Moonee Valley 24.11-155

MOONEE Valley wanted to assert a presence within the division about the brute force they can be and after starting this game with seven goals to one, they helped that cause.

Despite such a dominant start from Moonee Valley that carried through the entire game, some players from Burnside Heights did put their bodies on the line and gave it all for their team and home fans.

Bears forward Josh Covelli continued his great run with another four majors, proving that he is hard to stop when on.

Meanwhile, it was a more shared role of goal kicking from the Fog who finished with 14 goal kickers, showing how well they can play team footy.

Ball-use for the Bears was classily displayed through Vincent Angelone and created for a thrilling match-up against the Fog's Jacob Adkins, who stepped up and created countless attacks.

Moonee Valley's pressure proved once again how match fit this team is, resulting in a 95-point win over the Bears.

Coburg Districts 23.14.152 def. Keilor Park 14.8-92

Keilor Park came out firing in this one, as they knew they would have to against the undefeated Lions.

With nifty foot skills from Aiden Cassar and accurate goal-kicking through Donato Monello's forward presence, who finished with six majors, the Devils were able to take a one-goal lead at quarter time, surprising many.

This did not last long as Coburg Districts coach Chris Tankard avidly reminded his players who they are in this competition.

It flicked the switch, with Coburg Districts kicking eight unanswered goals in the second quarter.

This dominance was displayed through bursts of speed provided by Nikolas Dimeski, who along with Spencer Aitken, put on a show for the home fans, lifting to kick seven goals.

After a promising start from the Devils and the emergence of some players early, the spirit and skill of the Lions was too good and they continued their unbeaten 2017 with a 60-point victory.

East Sunbury 7.7-49 def. by Northern Saints 8.16-64

A fast-paced game was spoken about during the week and although it was a low-scoring match, the speed and hard contests on display created plenty of highlights.

It was a tight game all day with great tackling pressure and players used their strength well defensively.

This pressure was on song all day for Saint Daheg Abdul-Wahed, who along with Callum Lever for the Thunder, built on tackles and spoils to spark their team.

The Thunder's Tom Cree was at his usual best as he hunted and set up for his team all day and he was able to finish with three goals for himself.

It made for a good match-up in the middle of the ground against ball magnet Ryan Lofaro, who willed himself through many tough contests.

Although low-scoring, a powerful premiership quarter of four goals to none by the Saints was too much for the Thunder to rally back, resulting a 15-point win for the away side.

Roxburgh Park 8.17-65 def. by Jacana 17.17-119

Many players stepped up early for Roxburgh Park, knowing it was going to be a tough outing against an in-form team, but after such amazing first and third quarters by Jacana, it was tough for the Magpies to mend.

With five goals in the first quarter to none and seven goals to two in the third, the Jags definitely used the wind to their advantage and put on a forceful display.

Kajanithen Gnanapragasam and Jack Elliot put their body on the line for the Magpies in countless ground and aerial contests and gained the footy aplenty.

However they were no match for the Jags’ consistency around the ground, where shared ball-use and switching the play out of defence was a major factor in their win.

Coming back for only his second game of the season, Rhys Evans built on the Jags’ run-and-carry even more, not only working hard to tackle around the ground, but getting some reward in front of goal with three of his own.

The overall strength and will for the Jacana players was too much for Roxburgh Park to handle.
