THIS Saturday marks a historic day for both Maribyrnong Park and Keilor, as they’re set to wear heritage jumpers in recognition of their unique and rich history.
Keilor first wore their heritage jumper against Maribyrnong Park in Round 17 last year in celebration of ‘heritage round’ for the football club.
This year, Maribyrnong Park have joined in the party, and have unveiled their first ever heritage jumper.
The jumper has never been worn before and represents how Maribyrnong Park came to fruition.
The jersey is a simple design, with red dominating the bottom half and a striking blue occupying the top half of the jumper.
Under the EDFL logo is the logo of the Riverside Stars, a club that spanned from 1947-1979.
On the other side, under the Strathmore Community Bank logo, the logo of the ‘Moonee Imperials’ is featured – a team that spanned from 1948-1979.
These two clubs formed together to become the Maribyrnong Park Lions in 1980, after sharing grounds and clubrooms for many years beforehand.
The Keilor jumper design features blue and white stripes with a red slash striking through the middle of the jersey.
The heritage jumper wasn’t only worn last year, but was worn during its formative years as an EDFL football club.
Keilor is one of the oldest clubs in the EDFL, after joining the league in 1932.
This jumper symbolizes the difficult times that Keilor had to endure before becoming one of the most successful clubs in the EDFL.
Like many new clubs, they struggled in their first years at the EDFL, but quickly hit their straps and became one of the most recognized and popular clubs to date.
Both clubs are sure to put in a big fight in what is a huge Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Round 5 clash, not only for the victory, but to salute and pay their respect to their respective club’s decorated history.
