THE Blues were the unstoppable force in the EDFL& WRFL Senior Women’s Competition last year.
They went through the season undefeated and finished with an unbelievable percentage.
Sarah Wright was named the competition’s best-and-fairest after a stellar season where she dominated at the contests and kicked a handful of goals.
Teammate Brooke Todero also got her fair share of the footy in the forward line, with plenty of multiple-goal performances throughout the season.
Todero scored 60 goals for the season, including a five-goal haul in Round 1.
But it was with the help of experienced leaders such as Kallyn Gent, Jill McBain and Emily Law that helped Keilor win the grand final last year.
This success has meant that an influx of women and young girls have expressed their interest in playing football at the Keilor Football Club.
As a result, the Blues will field two senior women’s teams with one being in the EDFL and one being in the Northern League.
Keilor Women’s Co-Ordinator, Warren Grunden is hopeful that the club can continue to make waves in women’s football.
“We're confident in our teams in continuing to grow our football,” Grunden told essendondfl.com.au.
“(We are) excited by the prospect of our new recruits and bringing new girls and women into the game.”
The signs are looking good for Keilor, as Grunden explained how his side is tracking in the pre-season.
“The rapport between those that played last year and who are new to the game has been great,” he said.
“They're certainly passing on their skill sets to all the new arrivals that we've got.
“It'll be a mix of old and new spread amongst the two teams we’ll have in 2018.”
Keilor’s undefeated 2017 makes them a side to watch this year for the new EDFL senior women’s teams.
But the Blues are certainly keeping a close eye on particular sides who have proven that they could match it with the 2017 premiers.
“Westmeadows have proven just with their junior program that they’re strong and I think that you could never rule anyone out,” Grunden said.
“I know Burnside Heights have watched a number of games.
“Certainly Aberfeldie undoubtedly with their professionalism will be one to watch – and of course we’ve then got Pascoe Vale just to round that out.”
The new-look 2018 Keilor side has a mix of women aged between 19 and 25, with many in their mid to late 20s.
The Blues also have a diverse range of players who have migrated from other sports, including basketball, netball and soccer.
