Jacana Hits Back At Coburg Districts To Avenge Round 1 Loss

By LIAM McALLION

Coburg Districts 8.13-61 def. by Jacana 18.10-118

THE most highly-anticipated game in the division was promised and Jacana got some payback over Coburg Districts.

The previously undefeated Lions are no more.

Jacana’s leaders sparked them team to a huge victory as skipper Michael Evans showed power and skill out of packs.

Meanwhile Cameron Cloke was unbelievable with nine goals, showing that the Jaguars are the real deal and now the favourites for the Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 flag.

A battle in the midfield between Jacana's Evans and Lion Matt O'Dea provided for a great spectacle and many tough contests.

Sebastian Jansen was also among some who lifted for the Lions in such a big game.

But after a monstrous six goals to none in the first quarter, there was no coming back for the Lions, who fell to the accurate Jags by 57 points.

East Sunbury 13.12-90 def. Burnside Heights 13.5-83

Surprisingly this was the only tight contest of the round between the EDFL’s two newest clubs.

After a quick start from the Thunder, the Bears clawed their way back and it was goal-for-goal thereafter.

Josh Covelli had a game to remember with 10 majors, working for his team all day and providing a presence that is proving hard to stop each week.

A bigger spread of workload through eight different goal kickers for the Thunder, led by four from Corey Mobilio, proved many lesser-known East Sunbury players can lift when needed.

With a shootout between big keys at each end and speed off the halfback line in a thrilling contest, the Thunder was clutch in the last quarter and got over the line by seven points.

Roxburgh Park 9.10-64 def. by Moonee Valley 19.14-128

A fierce rivalry began in Round 1 and although a close encounter then, Moonee Valley proved how far they have come against the Roxburgh Park.

A reasonably close game was on show through the first half and big bodies made for another bruising tough match-up.

This included extreme pace and skill from the Magpies’ Tumay Humza out of the backline and through midfield leadership from Jayke Pratt.

These players have built each week and stepped up but after a whopping seven-goal third quarter by the Fog, there was no looking back.

Through Richard Potter and Tyson Edwards’ overpowering will for the footy and experience, the Fog dominated the second half, silencing the home crowd and collecting a comfortable 64-point victory.

Northern Saints 22-18-150 def. Keilor Park 7.5-47

In this division key players must step up and although some did for Keilor Park, the Northern Saints clicked this week and had many players at their peak.

The Saints shot out of the blocks quickly creating 11 scoring shots in the first quarter.

Although the team was inaccurate, Nicolas Bruno and Mohammed Taleb were unstoppable for the Saints, kicking a combined 13 goals.

Such a dominant display from the beginning didn't stop Pete Corredig for the Devils, who used his length in the air and long strides off half back to give the Saints a headache.

Aiden Cassar also was a part of the highlights for Keilor Park but although there more experienced and hard ball getters were firing, help around the ground was not there.

Presence up forward and quick ball movement by the Northern Saints was too much for the Devils, who lost by 103 points.

But it should have been more, with the Saints not making the most of their opportunities in front of goal.
