ABERFELDIE youngster Jordan Farrell was last night announced as captain of the Essendon District Football League’s U19 team.
Coach Geoff Maddern announced the 18-year-old as part of a four-man leadership group that will take on the Eastern Football League in the curtain-raiser for tomorrow’s WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships clash at Bayswater.
The group includes West Coburg midfielder Dinny Cleary, Essendon Doutta Stars goal-sneak Brodie Meyers and Maribyrnong Park defender, Brayden Schibeci.
Farrell told essendondfl.com.au he was pleasantly surprised to hear Maddern call out his name as captain at last night’s team dinner.
“It was a very big surprise,” Farrell said.
“I’m very humbled and very honoured to be considered for the role. Geoff and I have a good relationship and I’m very happy to get the role.”
Farrell will be leading a side that could feature up to eight players that contributed to last year’s U18 Interleague win over the Goulburn Valley Football League as well as several other regular starters at senior level.
“This year’s side has really good talent,” Farrell said.
“We’ve got good core depth and we’re a real run-and-gun team with some strength and I think we’ll need that coming up against the EFL.
“I think the side we’ve got currently will gel together well and I think we should put up a good fight.”
Ten EDFL clubs are represented in the final squad of 25, with 23 to take the field at Bayswater.
