EDFL Men’s Weekend Outlook - Thursday June 29, 2023

Presented by Strathmore Community Bank and Rookie Me

Kicking off a stacked round of Premier Division footy are Aberfeldie and Pascoe Vale.

Abers have picked up two good wins after the bye to keep themselves in the finals hunt and will test their legitimacy against Pascoe Vale.

They knocked off East Keilor a couple of weeks ago and welcomed some notable players back into the side like Karl Brown, Lucas Rocci, and Samuel Paea.

Pacco on the other hand suffered a heavy defeat to ladder leaders Keilor last week, but had the better of Abers in their Round 1 meeting by four goals.

In a similar bout for finals legitimacy, Greenvale will have another opportunity to better East Keilor after going down by four points in their Round 1 matchup.

The Jets have since proved they’re a genuine finals threat, their latest victory against Strathmore placing them just out of the top four on percentage.

East Keilor have lost two of their last three and will be wanting to get back on track with a win against an in-form team to maintain their one-game separation on Strathmore and Greenvale.

It’s Keilor against the rest at this stage and they’ll face Airport West who have lost their last two games since the bye, including a loss to Essendon Doutta Stars.

The Eagles have struggled for consistency in terms of their playing group and while they are on the outer in the finals conversation following their recent form, they’ll want to put up some competitive showings in the back end of the season.

For Keilor, it’ll be business as usual for them and they will be wanting to replicate their earlier win against the Eagles to maintain ascendancy in the competition.

Down at Monk Oval there’ll be a relegation battle between Maribyrnong Park and Avondale Heights.

Avondale Heights secured their only win for the season against Marby in Round 1 with a goal after the siren, while Marby also has just the one win for the season coming against Douttas.

While there are still more opportunities for both sides to get wins on the board, you can’t help but feel like this game may be a deciding factor.

In the final game, Essendon Doutta Stars will play Strathmore at Nipper Jordan Oval.

Strathmore have been depleted with some key injuries and are currently hanging onto a top four position.

Douttas meanwhile have shown some promising signs with a young list and will want to build on their win against Airport West.

Tullamarine have found themselves in the relegation zone and start their push to remain in Rookie Me Division One against Craigieburn this Saturday.

The club announced earlier in the week that Ben Tankard would no longer be their coach with David Connell set to jump back into the coaches box.

They’ll be hoping that a change of coach will come with a change of fortune as Craigieburn have proved they’re a side that can be dangerous on their day.

West Coburg will travel to Shark Park as they look to maintain their undefeated streak against Hillside.

It’s the first time these sides have met in 2023 with West Coburg dealing with every challenge so far, while Hillside are coming off an upset loss to Westmeadows.

Hillside are now on the same amount of points as sixth-placed Roxburgh Park so either way, it’s an important game for them.

In a similarly important game, Roxburgh Park will host St Albans who share the same amount of points.

St Albans took Roxy’s place in the top-five with very little separating the sides.

Keilor Park secured their first win since Round 4 last time out and will be wanting to make it two on the trot against Glenroy.

The Devils are chasing their fifth win in their first season since promotion, while Glenroy find themselves at the bottom of the ladder.

They’re a win behind the two sides above them and will be wanting to pull off an upset victory to keep their hopes of staying up alive.

In other games, Moonee Valley will face Deer Park, while Westmeadows will be aiming to pull off a second upset against the Sharks when they face Rupertswood.

EDFL Match of the Day will head to Cole Reserve to see Coburg Districts take on Burnside Heights.

The two sides have been in a battle to try and secure fourth spot, but with the sudden emergence of Sunbury Kangaroos, this matchup now has a lot more riding on it.

Coburg Districts are coming off a loss to Sunbury Kangaroos while Burnside Heights lost to ladder leaders Northern Saints last week.

That Northern Saints outfit will face Hadfield who have struggled to get going in 2023.

The Hawks had just two wins but were able to keep Northern Saints to 59 points last time they met and will be hoping for a similar performance to give themselves a chance to pull off an upset.

Sunbury Kangaroos have flung themselves into the finals conversation and will have a chance to test their legitimacy against Oak Park.

The last time they met, Oak Park escaped with a two-point victory which shows that despite the 0-5 start, Sunbury Kangaroos are capable of continuing their finals push.

In the final game, Taylors Lakes will have a chance to make it two in a row against East Sunbury.
