EDFL Men’s Weekend Outlook - Thursday June 1, 2023

Presented by Strathmore Community Bank and Rookie Me

The Nena and Pasadena Match of the Day team will be heading to Overland Reserve for this mouth-watering clash between East Keilor and Pascoe Vale.

Both sides sit 6-1 with Pascoe Vale just above the Cougars on percentage, so not much separates these two sides.

Each of their losses have come at the hands of Keilor but have put away every other side in their path.

The Cougars will want to shut down the varied avenues to goal the Panthers have to get another win against a 2022 finalist.

Airport West are chasing their third win of the season to get within arms reach of the top four when they face Maribyrnong Park at Hansen Reserve.

The Eagles have well and truly found their feet in the top flight with an impressive month of footy, while Marby finally secured their first win of the season against Douttas last week.

Despite being 2-2 in their last four games, Airport West were competitive against Strathmore and Pascoe Vale, while putting Avondale Heights and Aberfeldie to the sword to prove they’re a dangerous side in this competition.

Marby on the other hand would have expected to be in a better position at this point in the season, but have shown a propensity to compete for long periods of a game, just not the complete four quarters.

Essendon Doutta Stars will play host to Greenvale at Nipper Jordan Oval, with Greenvale peering into the top four, and Douttas looking to get themselves out of the relegation battle.

Greenvale have played themselves into form over the last month of footy despite their loss to Keilor, while Douttas have experienced a minor recession with their younger side since their early two wins.

It’ll be an interesting watch with both teams accustomed to a larger ground to operate in.

In the final game this weekend, Keilor will travel to Canning Reserve to take on Avondale Heights as they look to secure the stronghold at the top of the ladder.

On Sunday June 11, Strathmore will face Aberfeldie in the King’s Birthday clash.

Roxburgh Park are undefeated in their last four weeks of footy and will get an insight as to where they stack up against the best when they face West Coburg at Shore Reserve.

After a 20-point loss to Rupertswood, the Magpies handed Hillside their first loss, and have been consistent since then.

If they’re to give themselves a chance, it’ll be by rectifying their woes in front of goals they experienced during a pair of fixtures in that period.

The undefeated Burgers have been utterly dominant averaging 116 points per game, letting in just over 52 the other way.

Moonee Valley are coming off a thumping victory over Glenroy and will want to carry that momentum into their clash with Westmeadows to make it three on the trot.

Westmeadows have shown some good form over the last couple of weeks with a win against Keilor Park and a high-scoring effort against Craigieburn.

If both sides bring their best, it could be an enticing result.

Deer Park rebounded last week with another strong final term against Hillside, and will this week face Craigieburn at John McLeod Reserve.

The two losses of the Lions have been within a kick as they could easily be 7-0, but are still fancied as a premiership contender.

Craigieburn meanwhile have been inconsistent at times with their best and worst being considerably far apart.

They’ll use it as a good test should they bring their best footy, but running with Deer Park for the full game will be pivotal.

Keilor Park have lost three on the trot and will face a tough task in stopping the bleeding when they face St Albans.

The Saints enjoyed a tight victory over Rupertswood last week, with their three losses coming against sides above them on the ladder.

The Devils are a low-scoring side, but have been able to restrict some sides with some stringent defence.

Tullamarine will face Hillside at Jacana Reserve as they look to get their first win of the season at their temporary home base.

Inconsistency has marred Tulla in 2023 and will need to bring their best to stop a rampant Hillside outfit who has their eyes firmly set on the finals.

After a pair of tough contests that they split results in, Rupertswood will have the chance to get back on the winner’s list when they face Glenroy at Sewell Reserve.

Rupo have had a narrow win over Deer Park and a narrow loss to St Albans, while Glenroy are coming off three big losses following their solitary win against Westmeadows.

Burnside Heights have had a pair of comfortable victories to find their feet and get into the top four under new coach Cole Harvey and will face a big test in Oak Park.

The Kangaroos are coming off their first loss of the season and will be aiming to bounce back with a vengeance.

The Bears are ranked second for defence behind Oak Park, but will need to get a score on the board to be ahead of Oak Park who average over 100 points a game.

Two of the biggest surprise packets in Division Two will square off in Northern Saints and Taylors Lakes.

Northern Saints have had a steep rise and knocked off the undefeated Oak Park last week in a statement win.

Taylors Lakes on the other hand had a busy summer and haven’t missed a beat since their opening round fault, finding that team chemistry.

Both sides are evenly poised, it’ll be must-watch footy.

Sunbury Kangaroos will be looking to get even with Hadfield in the wins column when they face off at Eric Boardman Reserve on Saturday.

The Kangaroos won their first game of the season with a huge 103-point victory in the local derby with East Sunbury, while Hadfield have had an indifferent season so far.

They average just over 50 points a game and will need to find their feet in front of goals moving ahead in the season.

Coburg Districts find themselves just outside of the top four on percentage and will have a good opportunity to move back in with their clash against East Sunbury.

The Lions sit 3-3, with two of those losses being within four goals in high-scoring efforts.

For East Sunbury, getting an entirely new team to gel will take time, coach Aaron Kite will be hoping that happens sooner rather than later.
