TRY STOPPING KEILOR

Keilor have yet again made a big statement with a 59-point victory over the second-placed Pascoe Vale at Raeburn Reserve.

The Blues’ dominance goes without saying in 2023 scoring over 100 points in every single game, the only outlier in terms of final margins is a 12-point win over the Panthers in Round 2.

It was a completely different story this time around with Keilor booting seven goals to one in the opening quarter that was smashed by rain, a margin they’d maintain for the game.

They boasted 11 different goal scorers and were much more efficient moving the ball inside 50 than Pascoe Vale.

Beyond the Round 2 result, Aberfeldie came the closest to Keilor in terms of the final margin (50 points), as all teams will have another chance at the premiership favourites in the second half of the season.

GREENVALE PUSH CASE FOR FINALS

After a stirring nine-point triumph over Strathmore, Greenvale now find themselves equal on points with the Mores who currently sit fourth, and have given themselves every opportunity to make a finals run in the second half of the season.

It was a low-scoring affair with just 11 goals scored for the match and the margin not blowing out beyond seven points at any of the breaks.

Jonathan Keratonios kicked three goals in a best on ground effort for the Jets, with Trent Warren and Jett Ladewig also producing pivotal performances.

Greenvale might be tied for fourth and a game behind third, but there is still a sizable percentage differential to make up.

When it comes to the pointy end of the season, will their slow start to the season come back to haunt them?

WESTMEADOWS UPSET HILLSIDE

Westmeadows pulled up off a brilliant upset with a 15-point win over third-place Hillside at Willowbrook Reserve.

It was a low-scoring game, but the Tigers had a commanding grip on the game from start to finish, highlighted by a particularly strong first half.

The Sharks were able to work their way back into the game in the second half, but Westy kept them at arm’s length and secured a vital victory in the context of the season.

They now find themselves out of the relegation zone having moved above Tullamarine with a narrow percentage buffer, one of the more interesting contests considering both sides played finals in 2022.

Hillside remains third but now find themselves level with St Albans.

SUNBURY KANGAROOS DARE TO DREAM

A victory over Burnside Heights last week established Sunbury Kangaroos’ finals credentials, but it still felt like it may have been a tough task to continue their form and work their way into the conversation.

With a convincing win over another 2022 finalist in Coburg Districts on Saturday afternoon, they now find themselves just one win out of the top four.

Blake Tirchett was once again named the Kangaroos’ best, while the reliable Rhys Magin kicked four.

With two of their three narrow losses to start the season now rectified, they’ll have a chance at the third when they play Oak Park at Eric Boardman Reserve, a side that’s proven to be beatable.

If they’re able to maintain the rage, a buoyant Sunbury Kangaroos outfit is going to be a tough prospect come the pointy end of the year.

MARBY TOPPLE FOG

A four-goal second term gave Maribyrnong Park the separation they needed in a vital clash with third-placed Moonee Valley, running away 17-point victors in the end.

India Barker kicked three and was named best for Marby, while Zoe Manning (two goals) and Stephanie Eshak were also among the top contributors.

The win brings them (and Keilor) to just one game behind Moonee Valley which makes the run home all the more interesting.

Sitting on the cusp of the top four, Marby have dropped some games they probably shouldn’t have but have been competitive against the top sides.

TOP THREE GET THE JOB DONE

The top three sides on the ladder were facing the bottom three sides with the results going exactly as forecast.

At Jacana Reserve, Greenvale defeated Tullamarine by 14 goals behind five goals from Alisa Magri and three goals from Nicolette Paschalis.

Essendon Doutta Stars defeated Gisborne by 31 points at Buckley Park, keeping the visitors to just one point for the match.

Burnside Heights were steady in front of goal (13.5) as they defeated Sunbury Lions by 82 points thanks to five multiple goal scorers.

KANGAROOS STEADILY IMPROVING

After a tough start to the season in Division One, Sunbury Kangaroos have won three of their six games in Division Two to sit a game clear as the best in the bottom four.

Their latest, a 52-point victory over Maribyrnong Park 2. Georgia Marinier (three goals), Victoria Brown (two goals), Lisa Kirby (two goals), and Bianca-Lee Byrne were some of the top contributors for the Kangaroos.

While it’s unlikely they’ll play finals, it’s certainly been a renewed environment for the girls at Eric Boardman Reserve.
