ABERS BACK ON THE WINNER’S LIST

After falling three games out of the top four, a depleted Abers outfit has beaten finals contender East Keilor to give themselves hope of staying within reach of September action.

With injuries, unavailability, and their ruck and leading goal kicker missing time due to suspension, Abers went home with a 31-point victory at Clifton Park.

They were hot out of the gates with a three goal to none opening quarter, restricting the Cougars to just 10 points for the first half.

Abers were able to find more avenues to goal in Josh Kemp’s absence, with double the amount of individual goal scorers compared to East Keilor.

Jack Middleton was named the Two Blues’ best, while Ben Caluzzi was the best for the Cougars.

GREENVALE EDGE AIRPORT WEST

It was the first meeting for these two sides peering into the finals with the second being the final round.

This time, it was Greenvale taking a 28-point win to remain one win behind fourth spot.

The Jets outscored the Eagles 54-25 in the second half with Ben Speight’s three goals a clear best on ground effort.

Next week, Greenvale will face Strathmore in another test for their finals hopes, while Airport West will have a chance to atone for their earlier loss against Essendon Doutta Stars at Hansen Reserve.

ST ALBANS POWER THROUGH DESPITE SCARE

With results mostly going as expected in Rookie Me Division One, it was important for St Albans to stay within reach of the top four and that’s exactly what they did.

It was a narrow win in the end against Craigieburn with just two points separating the sides in a low-scoring affair.

The win keeps St Albans within four points of the top five, with a chance to draw level next week.

They play Moonee Valley, while Rupertswood faces West Coburg and Roxburgh Park plays Deer Park which the Saints will be hoping the results will go their way.

KANGAROOS CONTINUE RESURGENCE

Sunbury Kangaroos are well and truly back on track following a two-goal win over Burnside Heights, their third win in a row.

Their previous two victories came against the two bottom sides and after some tight contests against finals contenders earlier in the year, the Kangaroos have got one back on their side of the ledger.

Seven individual goal scorers kicked their 10 goals, while Blake Tirchett was named their best.

While it may seem unlikely the Kangaroos can work their way back into the top four, with an open competition, they’re only two games out which is certainly possible.

It’s a tough road ahead, but it’ll be one we watch with great intrigue.
