Weekend Wrap

Jets Stay Unblemished Against Misfiring Abers

ABERFELDIE’S indifferent start to its premiership defence continued on Saturday as Greenvale made amends for the 2017 Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Grand Final.

Adam Potter’s men remain fourth on the table at 2-1-1 after failing to convert when they needed to in a low-scoring affair at Clifton Park.

Fabian Deluca and Fort Carsuo were the stars in a side that was missing Nat Caruso, Courtenay Dempsey and Daniel Micevski.

Aberfeldie was again undermanned as well and particularly up forward, with Kyle Reimers and Jayden Foster out of action.

The Gorillas led by three points at half time but went goalless in the third, going on to only register 6.10 for the day to fall two points short of the undefeated Jets.

Final: Aberfeldie 6.10-46 def. by Greenvale 7.6-48

Pacco Home Ground Woes Continue Against Undefeated Lions

Pascoe Vale is languishing at seventh spot on the table after going down to Maribyrnong Park in what was an entertaining affair at Raeburn Reserve.

It stayed close all day, with Matthew Watson and Lachie Hansen again standing up with a combined six goals, but the Panthers’ depth remains a big issue against the division’s contenders.

You simply can’t fault the Lions at the moment and they are emerging as a genuine flag contender in 2018.

Daylan Kempster continued his solid start to Season 2018 with three majors, while Jock Cornell is fifth on the goal-kicking table after slotting another two on Saturday.

The Lions’ Round 7 home game against Greenvale is looming as the biggest game of the year coming up at the end of May.

Final: Pascoe Vale 11.9-75 def. by Maribyrnong Park 12.13-85

Wayward Cougars Still Winless

The hype bubble has well and truly burst down at Overland Reserve.

The Cougars landed some big names over the summer but after three games, remain winless in Essendon Ford Division 1.

One of those recruits, former Strathmore star Matt Knight, was good against Airport West on the weekend with four goals.

East Keilor led by a goal at half time before the Eagles kicked into gear, with Hutchison Medallist Tyson Young again leading the way up forward with three goals to help steer his side to a hard-fought 16-point win.

Airport West is undefeated at 2-0 with Jacana coming up next.

Final: East Keilor 9.14-68 def. by Airport West 12.12-84

Eagles Put Jags To The Sword

Jacana was hopeful it would make amends for its disappointing Round 1 effort against Westmeadows, but that hope faded pretty quickly up at DS Aitken Reserve on Saturday.

The Jags allowed Craigieburn a huge jump at the gate, conceding 10 goals to one in the first quarter.

By half time the margin was already three figures in a result that will have Jacana now placed as the favourite for relegation out of Essendon Ford Division 1.

On a positive note, Jason Cloke finally hit the scoreboard with four goals against his old club, but up the other end it was new Eagles recruit Dean Limbach who was the star with 10 in a best-on-ground performance.

Final: Craigieburn 31.14-200 def. Jacana 12.6-78

Thunder Emerges As Genuine Division 2 Contender

Saturday’s home clash with the Northern Saints was East Sunbury’s litmus test, and it passed with flying colours.

In what was a see-sawing battle on EDFL Match of the Day up at John McMahon Reserve, the Thunder had to claw its way back into a game that was seemingly lost.

The Northern Saints, led brilliantly up forward by Khodr Taleb and Rocky Ferraro, had the breeze at their backs in the final term but ran out of legs when it mattered.

The Thunder edged their way in front with clutch final quarter goals to Tom Cree, Callum Lever and Corey Mobilio to remain on top of the Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 table at 4-0.

Ex-Calder Cannons captain Brad Bernacki was the RAWFORM Seamless Compression EDFL Player of the Day with two snags of his own.

Final: East Sunbury 10.9-69 def. Northern Saints 10.5-65

Districts Finally On The Board And In The Four

There were some sighs of relief down at Coburg Districts on the weekend as the Lions eased their way to a comfortable 64-point win at Hadfield.

The Lions were without superstar Luke Vesnaver but luckily had brother Matt at their disposal.

The ex-Panther was the difference with seven goals as Coburg Districts dished out the punishment to a Hadfield outfit that is still struggling without a win since coming down from Essendon Ford Division 1.

The resultant percentage boost was enough for the Lions to end up in the top four, despite only having a 1-2 record.

Final: Hadfield 9.11-65 def. by Coburg Districts 19.15-129

Women’s Grading Rounds Complete As Panthers, Bears Remain Undefeated

The EDFL will this week confirm the structure of EDFL Women’s with four rounds of footy now complete in the new competition.

In a standalone Saturday game, Westmeadows continued its strong start to the year with a hard-fought 23-point win over Keilor Park.

On Sunday the feature game was between the Sunbury Kangaroos and Burnside Heights, with the Bears enjoying a solid nine-goal win.

Brooke McKinley was again the star with four goals and leads the EDFL Women’s goal-kicking tally with 17 goals alongside Pascoe Vale’s Siobhan Carlton.

Meanwhile, Pascoe Vale remains undefeated on top of the ladder after keeping Hillside scoreless at Shark Park on Sunday.

Elizabeth McGrath snagged four in the 116-point win.
