Burnside Heights 11.9-75 def. Keilor Park 8.9-57
THE pride in the battle for a win brought out the best in some players but ultimately was a disappointment for Keilor Park as Burnside Heights asserted their dominance over them on Saturday.
The Bears showed they wanted the win more after a powerful seven-goal-to-three first half and from there, they never took a backward step.
Even with control and poise around the ground from Brett Thomas and leadership by example with intercept marking and run out of half back from skipper Pete Corredig, the Devils couldn't get into a groove for the entire game.
On the back of the lift from Bear powerhouses Josh Covelli and Anthony Fawcus kicking seven goals between them and with the aerial presence and team play from Logan Clegg, the Bears were able to grab their first win of the season by 18 points and keep the Devils winless.
Coburg Districts 10.13-73 def. East Sunbury 6.7-43
The ever-consistent Coburg Districts was impressive again against a swift East Sunbury side.
The Thunder’s effort and skill was again on display through Tom Burnside and Lachlan Brne but there was a lack of experience and lift from older players, which didn't help the Thunder’s chances.
Tackling pressure and large numbers around contests were pivotal in the Lions win, led by Jesse McNamara's power in packs and impact up forward, along with Michael O’Dea’s spoils and ball-winning ability.
This grinding and fast-paced style of play lifted Coburg Districts against a quick Thunder outfit, and they adjusted well to continue their unbeaten start with a 30-point victory.
Roxburgh Park 13.13-91 def. Northern Saints 8.11-59
Much like the Lions’ have so far this season, Roxburgh Park was able to put on a winning display where many players contributed well.
This was shown through their many goal scorers and new players stepping up to be in their best.
But the Northern Saints were right beside them all day until the end.
Through skilful use of the ball and run-and-carry from Ryan Lofaro and clearances turned into deep promising forward entries by Andrew Saad, the Saints battled all day but just couldn’t finish strong.
It was a thrilling goal-for-goal contest until the last quarter, where the Magpies dug deeper than the Saints and were able to score three unanswered goals.
With promising lift in effort and all-round positive games in the speed and attacking play of Hayden Farrelly and Dale Rigby, the Magpies ended the match with more legs, getting the win and showing they can compete with the best of Strathmore Community Bank Division 2.
Moonee Valley 9.10-64 def. by Jacana 13.9-87
Cameron Cloke’s usual impact helped Jacana continue their winning streak against a competitive Moonee Valley side.
Putting it all on the line, the Fog battled hard and tested the Jags’ defence.
This competitiveness shone through forward pressure and skilful play building on the scoreboard by Jacob Adkins, who finished with three majors to try and lift his side, while Rhys Gleisner used his size and won plenty of contested ball.
Despite their efforts, Moonee Valley couldn’t overcome the brute force of Jacana, who through Bryce Mall and Dale Keenan, were able to finish powerfully and get a 23-point win.
